Market Risk Quantification Summer Analyst

What I liked

We didn't just have useless intern projects, we actually did work that full time members did when we weren't there, so it really felt like we had an important roll to play at the firm. Also, we were able to have catch-ups with anyone that we wanted to talk to (barring those whose schedules were very full). I really liked how we were encouraged to talk to anyone and everyone about their roles, and we were able to make suggestions about their work. They really have a flat culture, and you get to work with some of the smartest and most interesting people I have ever met.

What I wish was different

I didn't exactly love the work I was doing, Also, this isn't a 9-5 job and they pay you salary not hourly, which is different from most internships. I also wish I got more choice in which team we got placed on, they kind of just told us what team was giving us an offer and matched us themselves.

Advice

I really had a great time! If you really want to work at the firm some of the best ways to gain exposure would be to attend one of their exploratory programs as they recruit from those programs for internships. Also, don't be concerned about not knowing anything about finance - I didn't know any finance at all going in. They really do like to hire students from all majors, so don't be concerned at all!

Prime Brokerage and Clearing Operations Intern

June - August 2018 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I enjoyed the rigorous environment and the real world problems I was able to solve. My team was fantastic, and the organization of the internship is incredible. I had a solid mentor, HCM mentor, buddy on my team, and networking was highly encouraged. I was able to shadow and learn about many teams across nearly all divisions in the firm.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have known there are so many laws and regulations to comply with, so I was unable to do any trading or any other outside activities other than the internship. I wish the internship was more flexible to allow for a few days to be absent, since this wasn't allowed except for extreme cases.

Advice

Be aware that there are so many events created for interns, like "GS Talks" (similar to TED), a pitch competition, get-to-know-you events, and a host of others. Don't be afraid to set up networking visits with people in other divisions, because everyone is willing to meet, even MD's if you schedule far enough in advance and come prepared.

The hours were way too long

Make sure you take advantage of the fact that you can meet whoever you want and learn as much as you can from the internship.
