Operations Summer Analyst

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I really enjoyed learning from a wide range of professionals in such a dynamic environment. I gained a lot of new technical skills while also expanding my own personal network and knowledge of financial markets.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more thorough training at the beginning of the internship. I also wish that the intern project for the summer had been more clearly outlined from the start.

Advice

The summer analyst position is a great opportunity to not only gain a greater understanding of what your specific team does, but also of other Goldman Sachs teams and functions. I really enjoyed getting to know people on other teams and in different divisions to learn more about how the firm functions as a whole. Through talking with people in different divisions throughout the summer, I was able to gain a better understanding of what division I felt would be the best fit for me for a full-time position as well.

Securities Division Analyst

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

My summer experience at GS was absolutely amazing—the most fulfilling experience I’ve ever had. GS is an amazing company that really believes in building up their people, maintaining healthy work-life balances, team driven environments, and giving back to communities. I feel like I’ve grown so much over the span of 3 months, thanks to Goldman Sachs. I’ve been able to further develop and hone my skills, and learn new ones.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Being able to experience what it would be like working as a full time analyst at the firm. It was also a very collaborative environment and I was able to work with many different team members and other interns.

What I wish was different

I wish the training at the start of the summer had been more technical based. A lot of what we did was focused on the culture of the firm rather than hard skills like excel.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to network with other people on your team as well as other people in the firm. No matter what company you work for this is valuable to expand your network and learn more about what you want to do in the future.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

You will learn more in 10 weeks than years of class. The caliber of people is unmatched. You are challenged but supported.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have focused more on expressing who I was than my ability to digest the difficult material.

Advice

Relax but give your all everyday. Focus on being the best version of yourself and let it show through your work and relationships.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Hardworking environment; early responsibility they give you in the internship; career optionality

What I wish was different

Earlier opportunity to network with various groups within Securities division before the internship starts

Advice

To spend as much time leading up to the internship preparing to hit the ground running (keeping up with global news, getting into the habit of waking up early and working long hours, etc.); after the internship, to reflect on whether it's what you see yourself doing full time vs. something else at Goldman or elsewhere

Investment Management Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Great people and an awesome location.

What I wish was different

Wasn't given tasks that really pertained to the job.

Advice

Try to get in at a different office. I applied for Salt Lake City but I likely would have learned a lot more in a bigger hub.

Operations Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I gained a lot of professional experience in a short amount of time. I was thrown right into the daily work of my team and treated was treated as if I was a full-time employee. Interns were given plenty of opportunities to explore other teams and network with people of various ranking throughout the firm. Being able to meet with a VP or a Managing Director was something that was easy to do.

What I wish was different

Having more choice in the team you are placed on would be nice. Being randomly assigned to a team within Operations makes it very unlikely you will be placed on a team you are super interested in.

Advice

The 10 weeks fly by. Absorbing as much as possible every day is super important.

Credit Risk Summery Analyst

May - July 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was able to learn a lot of technical skills through this internship. I got a lot better with Excel which was great and I learned more about how to understand deal sheets and the internal processes of how deals form. I also got better at looking at valuations and models. The people at Goldman are great and I was able to ask a lot of questions and get help when needed. The support system was great.

What I wish was different

The work for me wasn't extremely interesting, even though I was learning a lot. It was a lot of sitting at my desk looking at models and deal sheets, but there wasn't a lot of client interaction or site visits. I think this environment is good for some people, but for me I wanted a more interactive and dynamic environment.

Advice

I would say ask a lot of questions. People are often scared to ask questions but that is how you learn. It also shows that you are thinking about the projects deeply and care about learning more.

Operations Analyst Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

There are many positive outcomes from this internship experience. Firstly, just the opportunity to have the exposure to work in a financially driven environment and a leading global investment bank as Goldman Sachs was a fantastic experience. I really liked the diversity and inclusion at the division and team within the firm that I was working at. I felt welcomed since day one, but, most importantly, I felt encouraged to meet my potential and put in practice my skill-set. I liked that almost half-way through the internship, my team made me switched roles with a fellow intern because it gave me even more exposure to work in other tasks in my team, becoming more resourceful. Lastly, I really liked the fact that they encouraged me to schedule one on one interviews with other teams from other divisions to expand my personal network and get a better insight of the firm's functions as a whole.

What I wish was different

There are very few things that I disliked from my internship experience or that I had wished had been different. With that being said, since I am an engineering major I found it very challenging at the beginning to grasp a lot of financial terms. I had very little financial background prior to the internship, so I wish I would have taken a couple of short, but helpful online courses about investment banking and finance. However, I asked questions to my managers and co-workers to help understand terms that may have not been clear at me first, and then I carried research and study of my own. Hence, this was not a problem, but rather a learning experience and one that I was praised for afterwards by my managers (always asking questions and wanting to learn).

Advice

Definitely be prepared to perform out of your comfort sense. In this regard, be mentally prepared to accept challenges and not be intimated by them; they will be a great opportunity for you to promote your skills and build your personal brand within your team. Additionally to this advice, do not be afraid to ask questions, ask for help, and to ask people permission to shadow them; I found this to be the best learning method.

Investment Banking Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This was one of the best internship experiences I've had in college. I really liked the firm's culture of excellence and focus on people, tangible work over the summer that was actually reflective of what analysts do, and well-structured 10 week program

What I wish was different

Even though I felt like the program was mostly representative of the analyst experience, it still felt like there were things I wasn't able to learn in my 10 weeks that make me a little apprehensive about the full-time experience

Advice

Take in as much as you can over the summer and critically think about your own experience. Even though most people obviously want to receive a return offer, I thought it was really important to evaluate if it was a job I actually wanted, work I liked, and a team I wanted to be with

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

I loved working in an intense learning environment with smart people. I also loved being able to apply much of my undergraduate finance degree to my relevant field. I loved being able to work for a large company and experience the culture and success of the business.

What I wish was different

Not much! My experience was incredible. I wish I had done more before earlier in my studies to get an internship like this earlier!

Advice

I would recommend that students not sell themselves short. You can accomplish just about anything you set your mind to and work hard to achieve. Goldman Sachs is not out of reach for USU students. Prepare early and do everything you can to get an experience like this under your belt.

Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the industry and the senior level support. The projects I worked on were fairly engaging.

What I wish was different

I didn't like my second year internship as much as the first. The management system changed and it didn't feel quite as supportive or as clear of a process.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible to junior people.

What I liked

Great manager, fun project, fun startup atmosphere within Marcus by Goldman Sachs.

What I wish was different

It took forever for me to get data access. THe intern project was incredibly disorganized.

Advice

Be ready to work long hours but not crazy banking hours. Ask a lot of questions.
