Position Summary:

The newly formed Department of Materials Design and Innovation Department (MDI) at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York (UB), is seeking applications and nominations for multiple positions that include junior and senior tenure track faculty (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor positions). We are particularly looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse community of students and faculty and share our vision of helping all constituents reach their full potential.

The new department will train future materials scientists and engineers, with an emphasis on the use of advanced computational tools for modeling, simulation, informatics and automation in conjunction with experimentally driven science, with the aim to significantly accelerate the pace of materials discovery, engineering design and deployment. The department has been structured from its inception as one that will use transformative approaches to teaching and learning. It will educate highly adaptable individuals with expertise in materials science and engineering, strong skills in the field of data science coupled to training in the integration of experimental and computational methods in materials science. The long-term portfolio of the department will include biotechnology and medicine, advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, energy and environmental sciences. The faculty in the Department of Materials, Design and Innovation are and will have close interactions with numerous research and educational activities at UB, including the UB-based New York State Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI), the Research and Education in eNergy, Environment and Water Institute (UB-RENEW), the Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDSE) graduate program, UB Center for Computational Research (CCR), and the Buffalo Manufacturing Works facility in Buffalo.

A unique collaboration between the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and the College of Arts of Sciences (CAS), the new department builds upon UB’s existing faculty expertise and facilities across departments in both SEAS and CAS. This includes, for example, the Institute for the Strategic Enhancement of Educational Diversity, and Science and Engineering Equipment and Instrumentation Portal. MDI evolved from the UB 2020 strategic plan to strengthen UB’s position as a leading public university by investing in and focusing its research strengths on solving important societal problems. The establishment of the department provides a unique opportunity for faculty to be part of a transformational economic renaissance in the Buffalo-Niagara region that will lead Western New York as a global hub for advancing research and education. This provides new faculty to be engaged and grow in a dynamic, cosmopolitan international border city that offers a high quality of life, affordable housing, and a vibrant cultural and arts scene.

The selected candidate(s) will be expected to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, mentor graduate students and/or junior faculty, advise students at all levels and maintain an active research program.

Nominations and applications will be considered until the position is filled. Screening of applicants will begin September 1, 2017.

Minimum Qualifications:

We seek highly qualified applicants from fields of science and engineering who can develop and participate in highly interdisciplinary and innovative research and teaching programs, which incorporate a data-intensive perspective of materials science. These fields include the study of synthesis, processing, materials characterization, manufacturing design, materials theory, and computational and simulation techniques. Applications are also sought from candidates who work at the intersection of widely different disciplines, including but not limited to life sciences, applied mathematics, and systems engineering.

Candidates must have a doctorate in engineering or science prior to appointment.
