The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking to hire an intern in the Research & Analysis Division of the Planning Department. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is our region’s comprehensive planning organization. The agency and its partners are developing ON TO 2050, a new long-range plan to help the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois implement strategies that address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues. Position Description
The intern will work with the Research and Analysis team in an ongoing project to scan and geo-reference historical aerial photographs of the Chicago region using ESRI’s ArcGIS software. This will be a 12-week internship at 37.5 hours/week, with approximately 50% of the time dedicated to the scanning project; concurrent with this task will be a variety of geographic information system (GIS)-based data development activities to support long-range forecasting work at CMAP.
Essential Functions
Operate large-format scanner to scan aerial imagery
Enter metadata into Access database
Geo-reference scanned imagery using ArcGIS
Perform research to support land use, development, and employment monitoring activities
Edit vector GIS data (digitization and attribute update)
Conduct quality control and quality assurance on methods and procedures
Thoroughly document work products for use by other CMAP staff
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of general GIS concepts and functions; familiarity with ArcMap interface is required, as are basic office computer skills (word processing, data entry). Prior experience with georeferencing raster imagery strongly desired, along with experience in digitizing/editing vector datasets; knowledge of Python scripting and automation techniques helpful.
Education and Experience
Applicants for the position should be enrolled in a graduate degree program in geography, urban planning, environmental studies, or a related field.
Internship Timeframe
Depending on the student’s availability, this is a full-time summer position beginning in May or June 2017. It could potentially continue into the 2017-18 school year, but that is not guaranteed. Minor start and end-date accommodations may be made upon request.
