Domestic Violence Court summer Law Clerk

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB) Domestic Violence Court is seeking one summer law clerk; funded through the Justice for Families (JFF) grant awarded to LTBB Tribal Court. LTBB is an Indian Tribe in Harbor Springs, Michigan.  Harbor Springs is a resort community on the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan. The Domestic Violence Court Docket is premised on the one family, one-judge model and is a court of General Criminal Jurisdiction, Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction and Civil Jurisdiction.

The Tribal Court is looking for applications from students with a background and interest in domestic violence legal issues and tribal jurisdiction. No prior Indian Law classes are required, but a knowledge and interest of jurisdiction and the Violence against Women Act (VAWA) Reauthorization of 2013 is preferred. A genuine interest in Indian law and strong legal research and writing skills are necessary.

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

-Researching Domestic Violence best practices for victim safety and offender accountability

-Research and writing for the Domestic Violence Docket Program

-Research and writing of policies and procedures

-Participation in the DV Coordinated Community Response (CCR) team meetings

-Participation with the men’s re-education program

-Assessing, reviewing and writing Court Rules and Procedures

-Working with internal and external agencies as related to the docket

-Personal Protection Order (PPO) proceedings and drafting orders

-Develop policies and procedures surrounding jury trials

-Establish an Indigent Defense Program

-Update criminal law, rules of evidence, and rules of criminal procedure to be in compliance with SDVCJ

 Due to the significant cultural events and activities occurring on the reservation the Tribal Court allows time for and encourages our summer clerks to be involved in Tribal functions, events, and activities, as well as activities in the outlying community. Our clerks attend sacred fires and feasts, learn how to cut sweet grass and birch bark and participate in a variety of traditional activities.
