Interlochen Center for the Arts, one of America’s most prestigious institutions for arts education, performance and fine arts presentations, seeks energetic, dedicated and creative individuals with a desire to supervise and mentor high school students. Interlochen Arts Academy, the nation’s premiere fine arts boarding high school with an enrollment of 470-500, has openings available for Residence hall coordinators to serve as part of a team of student life professionals during the academic school year,  through May 2017.
 
Residence Hall Coordinators have the opportunity to work with some of the brightest and most talented young artists from around the world in a diverse boarding school community. Located in northern Michigan, Interlochen Arts Academy prepares young artists for rewarding careers and fosters academic excellence. Academy students, grades 9-12 and a post graduate year, come from almost every state in the nation and 20 countries to study comparative arts, creative writing, dance, motion picture arts, music, theatre, and visual arts.
 
Residence Hall Coordinators are responsible for the social, artistic and academic development of students in a boarding high school environment. Hall Coordinators hold a significant role in student affairs and will, at times, be required to work extraordinary hours. This student personnel position involves working with other residence life staff in the parental guidance of a diverse group of young people. This position will have focus areas and campus duties for the purpose of assisting with school operations, advising/assisting student groups and providing structured activities. These assignments take between 6-8 hours, some times 20+ hours, each week and can fall within the following areas: Campus Schedule, managing / advising student groups, Campus Work Hours, student leadership, Transportation, Detention, and other special projects.
 
Each Hall Coordinator lives in a residence hall and is responsible for the primary care of an assigned group of students living in his/her building. Hall Coordinators are provided with an apartment with a private bath comprised of two connected student rooms.

 
Major job responsibilities would include the following:
  • The monitoring and enforcement of building and school policies
  • Managing 20-30 hours per week front desk coverage
  • Fostering the students’ academic and personal development
  • Regularly communicate with parents for the purpose of providing general information and also to relay concerns and progress
  • Creating and leading social, educational and wellness programs
  • Chaperoning student off-campus trips and tours, and dining room supervision
  • Hall Coordinators draft and submit documentation of student behaviors and progress.
  • Most importantly, Hall Coordinators must possess the desire to create and maintain a safe and healthy residential community.
  • Additional assignments may include, but are not limited to such things as supervision of recreational activities, student government or community service.
  • Depending on interest, experience and institutional need, supplemental opportunities to help with educational tutoring, substitute teaching, counseling services and recreational programs may also be available.
  • Residence Hall Coordinators are supervised by Residence Hall Managers (secondary) and Dean of Students (primary).

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree required with emphasis in one of the fine arts, counseling, social work, or education desired.
  • Experience working with high-school aged students is preferred, as is prior residence life experience, but not required.
  • Previous work with conflict-resolution skills, peer mediation, crisis management and the ability to respond to emergency situations is also a plus.
  • A Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured to drive ICA vehicles is required in order to operate Interlochen vehicles and transport students if needed.
