Web Content Specialist (Communications Consultant 3)

The Department of Ecology is seeking an experienced web content professional to join our communications team.

Our communications team supports agency leadership and leads our strategic communications, public information and environmental outreach efforts. With more than 8 million visits a year, our website is our greatest communication channel.
 
We're leaders when it comes to sharing information via the news media, the web and through social media. We're always looking for ways to improve how we share our interesting and challenging stories. We are currently undertaking a major project to completely transform our website to more effectively communicate and interact with our various audiences.

We're looking for an experienced Web Content Specialist to serve as a collaborative and integrated member of our Communications team. As part of Communications, you'll be joining a fast-paced, dynamic and strategic team.
 
Ecology's website is our greatest communications channel for sharing agency news and information. It is also a primary tool used by our customers to conduct business with us. The Web Content Specialist will provide clear, accurate and timely communications to explain our work, why it matters, and the science behind it.
 
To best meet our visitors' needs, we are building a brand new, streamlined website based on user-centered design. You will be an instrumental member of the Web Transformation project team as we develop a premiere website that is more effective, inviting and engaging.
 
All content will be rewritten or newly created. You will work closely with authors and subject matter experts across the agency to rewrite and edit existing content and generate new content. You will also curate, write and maintain original content for top level web pages.
 
As the Web Content Specialist, you'll lead teams of content writers, ensuring they are meeting agency standards for web writing. You will provide quality assurance for web content before it is published on our website.
 
You will also manage, coordinate, create and edit content for the agency's internal online news source – Inside Ecology.
 
Some of the key work activities include:
 
Web content writing and generation:
 

  • Strategically leverage the agency website to share agency news and information.
  • Write new content and edit existing content on our website, working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Lead planning and strategy for high-priority web content.
  • Plan, organize, develop, and manage web content.
  • Advise and engage with communicators, web coordinators, content owners, and content creators on web strategy, policy, and governance.
  • Coach and train content owners and subject matter experts to create and manage compelling web content.
  • Leverage technology to enhance agency credibility with all our audiences.
  • Craft content that strategically blends the web, social media and graphics into enriching and compelling stories.
 
 Internal news and information: 
  • Manage, coordinate, create and edit content for Inside Ecology.
  • Strategically leverage the internal, online newsletter to share agency news.
  • Routinely post stories, update announcements, and manage the flow of story submissions.
  • Edit content to meet agency standards.
 
Writing for the web: 
  • As a strong writer and editor, adhere to Plain Talk, Writing for the Web, and Associated Press writing style principles and standards.
  • Strategically write for the web, as well as edit and organize content.
  • Write creatively and strategically for a variety of audiences and in a variety of formats.
  • Craft messaging and information that resonates with target audiences.
  • Translate complex information and data into compelling stories.
Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, humanities, public relations or related field

AND

Three (3) years of professional web writing/editing experience.

Applicable professional experience can be substituted year for year for education.

Must be proficient in writing for the web, knowledgeable about how people use the web to get information and to perform tasks, and understand web content strategy, navigation and architecture.
 

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience in developing web content strategy, writing/editing and managing web content.
  • Proven experience and proficiency working in HTML and content management systems.
  • Experience with Writing for the Web, Plain Talk, Associated Press, or other relevant web writing styles and standards.
  • Proven ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, work effectively as part of a team as well as able to work independently.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Adobe products such as Photoshop, Acrobat Pro and InDesign.
  • Experience with video recording and editing.
