Grounds Maintenance Technician - Parks and Public Space

Starting Hourly Rate: $11.72

(Internal Title: Equipment Operator II)

 

 

IMPORTANT POSITION INFORMATION

There is a possibility that this position may be renewed on an annual basis depending on the organization needs, funding and employee performance, in accordance with the City temporary worker's policy.

 

Nature of Work: This is semi-skilled manual and skilled light equipment operation work in the maintenance and operation of the City's parks. Work involves performing semi-skilled work in the upkeep of parks grounds, buildings, waterways, and recreation structures. Work requires knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of a variety of light hand equipment utilized in the maintenance and propagation of grass and plant life. Work is performed in accordance with established rules and regulations and written or verbal instructions from a superior and is reviewed for conformance and completeness. Operates hand and power tools and equipment; drives and operates trucks and tractors riding mowers utilized in park maintenance; uses equipment to remove snow. Cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and shelters. Mows grass, reseeds and fertilizes grassy areas; moves sprinkler systems to provide for proper water distribution; picks up debris, leaves and broken tree limbs. Assists in the laying out and installation of playgrounds, drains, water lines, culverts, and playground equipment; pours and finishes concrete. Repairs and maintains building structures; paints shelters and equipment; performs minor maintenance and service work on mechanical equipment. Performs related work as required. May exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Required Qualifications: Minimum of 18 years of age. The incumbent must have the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as he/she may be required to drive a vehicle for local travel. Must have a valid driver's license and medical card upon hire. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse climatic conditions. Mechanical aptitude and experience operating large equipment, tractors, trucks, pulling trailers as required in grounds keeping, semi-skilled building maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of the common practices, procedures, materials, and equipment used in maintaining and repairing park facilities and equipment. Knowledge of the hazards associated with the operation of light powered cutting equipment.

 

Physical Requirements: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

 

Incumbent may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions (i.e., domestic and wild animals, confined spaces, heights, mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.), poor atmospheric conditions (i.e., fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation), extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, and intense noise.

 

The work often involves the ability to perform routine moderate lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs and occasional heavy lifting up to 100 lbs.

 

Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
