Job Summary

The School of Information (UMSI) is a progressive, interdisciplinary professional school offering a Bachelor of Science in Information, a Master of Science in Information, a Master of Health Informatics, and a Ph.D. Our mission is to create and share knowledge so that people will use information – with technology – to build a better world.

Reporting to the Director for Development and Alumni Relations, this position will be responsible for identifying stewardship opportunities for major donors, designing and implementing fundraising plans, and managing special events to cultivate new individual, corporate, and institutional prospects.

Responsibilities*

FUNDRAISING RESPONSIBILITIES (50%)

Responsible for a major gift portfolio with emphasis on Michigan and the Mid-West. Duties include but are not limited to:

Identify, assess, analyze, and design appropriate strategies for approaching prospects and donors and making the vitally important match between donors’ philanthropic interests and the department funding needs. Proactively manage a portfolio of individual major gift prospects and donors, with a focus on cash gifts $10,000 and planned gifts. Conduct approximately 50-100 strategic moves with prospects and donors per year and participate in approximately 15-25 solicitations per year. Manage the mid-level donor population, including a portfolio of 200 individuals. Oversee strategic moves, using various technology, with the mid-level donor portfolio and assess success of project.

Plan and implement effective outreach and cultivation activities to enhance prospect identification and move solicitation and stewardship processes forward. Work collaboratively with other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall development goals.

Initiate regular reports, analyze data, and maintain accurate and current records including contact reports and individual development and stewardship plans in the University’s donor database.  

ANNUAL GIVING AND ALUMNI RELATIONS COMMUNICATIONS (35%)

Responsible for support of the annual giving campaigns, including annual fund, class gift, faculty-staff campaign, and prospect pipeline activities. Build strategic and tactical plans for increasing alumni giving and participation.   Manage telefund and direct mail projects details with University Annual Giving Office. Develop content for the annual giving programs and telefund.

Manage new annual giving programs to build non-alumni donor base such as parents, family and friends, as well as faculty and staff programs. Provide drafts and support for content of UMSI newsletters, Calendarzine, website, and other special materials for gift solicitation.    

DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT AND COLLABORATION (5%)

Develop a partnership with major gift officers to support donor work as required. Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout the University. Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community.

FUNDRAISING AND ALUMNI EVENTS (5%)

Assist with signature events and specific events related to portfolio. Complete specific follow up with individual donor prospects from events.

GENERAL / ADMINISTRATIVE (5%)

Responsible for a thorough understanding of the school and general administrative associated with all development and internal/external relations. Schedule appointments and maintain calendar for self and the Director of Development. Gather and prepare supporting documentation to send to Shared Services Center for P-Card reconciliation, as well as travel and hosting reimbursements; order office supplies; review office budget.

Generate ad hoc reports.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Two to five (2-5) years of professional experience in direct fundraising and/or relevant experience in alumni outreach, sales, marketing or other related fields.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills and organizational skills with an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Demonstrated excellent problem solving, conflict resolution and customer service skills.
  • Sound knowledge of laws, practices and philosophy of charitable giving.
  • A creative and entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required, as well as a high level of sophistication and maturity in social and professional settings.
  • Must have excellent judgment with a professional demeanor and presentation.
  • A general level of comfort when dealing with high net worth individuals, and an ability to maintain discretion, and high level of confidentiality, when dealing with significant benefactors.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively in teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and collaborative campus culture.
  • Must meet the requirements of driving a University owned vehicle.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree.
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan organization, policies, and procedures.

Work Schedule

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require working during non-business hours and on weekends.

Work Locations

Will require travel to multiple locations on & off campus.   Will require some occassional state and out of state travel.
