Project Intern - Global Health Internship

Global Health Internship available for summer 2017 (anticipated start date May 30, 2017), full-time for approximately 12 weeks. The goal of this internship program is to provide an introduction to the administration and operations management of the Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatrics AIDS Initiative (BIPAI) and Texas Children’s Global Health Programs and exposure to key issues concerning global health management and program implementation. This internship is based in Houston, Texas and is intended for graduate level students.

The Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI) at Texas Children’s Hospital was established in 1996 with a goal of improving the health and lives of HIV-infected children and families globally through expanded access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment, health professional education and training and clinical research. The mission of the Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative and its affiliated non-government organizations is to provide high-quality, high-impact, highly ethical pediatric and family-centered health care, health professional training and clinical research, focused on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, malnutrition and other conditions impacting the health and well-being of children and families worldwide. Texas Children’s Global Health partners with foreign governments, UNICEF, USAID, CDC, WHO and many others, to share its expertise and best practices on maternal-child health around the world. Texas Children’s Global Health works to address healthcare needs in resource limited settings locally and globally by improving maternal and child health through the implementation of innovative, sustainable, in-country programs to train health professionals and build functional healthcare infrastructure. Texas Children’s Global Health programs include obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric cancer and hematology, emergency medicine, tuberculosis, BIPAI and tropical medicine to increase local- capacity in over 20 countries.

Interns will have the opportunity to:

• Gain experience in the field of global health operations management
• Develop skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure
• Opportunity to gain an understanding of global health programs and interventions in a variety of country contexts
• Gain exposure to global clinical programming and related health challenges in low resource settings
• Gain experience working with diverse and multidisciplinary global health implementers and experts
• Support the development and dissemination of relevant global health materials including briefing papers, presentations, training and outreach materials
• Document TCH contributions to global health programming
• Conduct landscape analysis and research on relevant global health issues, prospective partners, and donors
• Assist in project management to ensure that specific activities implemented under the department are on track to meet intended deliverables with a particular focus on Global Health priorities (e.g. operations, safety, scholarly activity, external affairs)
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the intern’s own interest
• Interns are expected to function independently, work across different time zones, and are responsible for their housing and transportation

Must be enrolled in a graduate degree-granting program with a focus on Health, Global Health, International Development, Public Policy, Non-Profit Management, Business Administration or other relevant area of study.
