About the Office of the Comptroller 

The New York City Comptroller is an independently elected official who serves as the Chief Financial Officer of the City of New York. The mission of the Office is to ensure the financial health of New York City by advising the Mayor, the City Council, and the public of the City's financial condition. The Comptroller also makes recommendations regarding City programs and operations, fiscal policies, and financial transactions. In addition, the Comptroller manages assets of the five New York City Pension Funds, performs budgetary analyses, audits City agencies, registers proposed contracts, determines credit needs, issues and sells City obligations. The Office employs a workforce of 760 professional staff which includes: accountants, auditors, attorneys, information technology specialists, economists, engineers, budget, financial and investment analysts, claim specialists and researchers in addition to administrative and support staff.  

Job Description

The Comptroller’s Office provides a wide range of learning and work opportunities to students with an interest in public service. Many bureaus within the Comptroller’s Office offer summer internships.

The duties of the office are diverse and include: conducting performance and financial audits of all City agencies; serving as a fiduciary to the City’s five public pension funds totaling nearly $160 billion in assets; providing comprehensive oversight of the City’s budget and fiscal condition; reviewing City contracts for integrity, accountability and fiscal compliance; managing the fair, efficient and effective resolution of claims; ensuring transparency and accountability in the prevailing wage rate-setting process and vigorously enforcing prevailing wage and living wage laws; and promoting innovative policies that enhance City government’s efficiency, integrity and performance for all New Yorkers.

Over the course of the nine-week program, interns will participate in hands-on departmental projects in their assigned bureau as well as an overall enrichment program that includes networking opportunities, professional development programming and community service activities.

Interns will be able to indicate their bureau preferences on the internship application. These preferences, along with educational and work experiences, will be taken into account when scheduling interviews and determining final work assignments.

Students are expected to work 28 hours a week on a Monday – Thursday schedule. 

Qualifications

The most successful candidates will have excellent communication and research skills and relevant education and experience. We welcome applications from students of all disciplines, especially accounting, computer science, engineering, finance, law, criminal justice, public affairs, public policy, urban studies and related areas of study to any of the above. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a BA/BS, MA/MS, J.D. or other graduate degree programs. 

Compensation

Currently interns will receive $12-14 (Undergraduate) and $15-$19 (Graduate and Law) an hour for a maximum work week of 28 hours.  

Program Term

The program period is from June 5th – August 3rd.
