Summer Research Internship - Cadre Research 2017

Interested in using your CS acumen to help fight crime? Cadre is seeking a bright and driven intern to join our young enthusiastic research group. The Cadre team is distributed across North America. You will be located in our Chicago office. Your time at Cadre will be similar to a university undergraduate research experience; but, unlike a university lab, our team works with university, corporate, and government partners. The details of our internship are flexible and together we will decide on the specifics of your experience.

We are looking for a Computer Science or Engineering student to join our Forensics team. Our main project is the development of a next generation three-dimensional imaging and analysis system for firearm forensics. In short, the system images the three-dimensional marks left on a cartridge casing at micron resolution and then compares these marks to determine if two casings were fired through the same firearm. We are also working on an audio analysis application extracting maximal data from crime scene recordings. We have federal research funding for both projects and are collaborating with local, state, and federal labs. See www.CadreForensics.com

We are looking for an intern to help with several aspects of both projects. Opportunities exist in working with 3d printing, mobile app development, machine learning/vision, and audio analysis. Note: No experience working with firearms is necessary and there are no firearms in our workplace.

Your internship will include independent work, group lab meetings with collaborators, direct collaboration, and opportunities for continued learning (e.g. reading research papers, participation in journal club, and watching seminars). Cadre is a young start-up with high-energy, a positive vibe, and low procedural barriers. We work in an office space shared with a fun fast-growing internet apparel company. Thus there are always great people around the coffee machine. We are located in Chicago, an amazing place to be during the summer months!

Desired Skills
Applicants must have undergraduate research experience in any area of Computer Science or Electrical Engineering; however, interest and experience in machine learning, machine vision, electronics, or software engineering is preferred. You’ll love your experience if you’re passionate about research and are interested in learning the realities of research in industry. A well-qualified candidate would be: an enthusiastic problem solver with previous undergraduate research experience who is interested in working on interdisciplinary computer science research in an industry setting. C++ and/or Python programming experience is ideal.

Responsibilities
You will be working both independently and in collaboration with both local and remote current team members. You’ll be responsible for algorithm and software development around specific focused research tasks. Your time at Cadre will be similar to a university undergraduate research experience; but, unlike a university lab, our team works with university, corporate, and government partners. The details of our internship are flexible and together we will decide on the specifics of your experience.
