Fisheries Aide (Temporary up to 6 months)

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) invites qualified persons to apply for an immediate temporary (up to 6 months) opening in the Fisheries and Wildlife Section of the Natural Resources Department. The Fisheries Aide assists in routine fish and wildlife monitoring activities at selected sites using a variety of prescribed methods; cleans, loads for transport, sets up, operates, and conducts minor maintenance of fish and wildlife monitoring equipment; collects, enters, and proofs accuracy of data in established databases; and performs related work as assigned. Reporting to EBMUD’s Orinda Office, fieldwork is carried out on EBMUD watersheds, EBMUD reservoirs, along local creeks and occasionally in the area of the lower Mokelumne River. 

Examples of duties include:

·  Assists with surveys as necessary for proposed annual grazing plan projects such as water development and fence building; assists in pre-project surveys for watershed maintenance activities including culvert repair and cleanouts, pond maintenance, road grading, fire and fuel control; assists in radio telemetry projects including telemetry for sensitive species; prepares for video and range camera monitoring of watershed sites by assembling and loading equipment for transport; collects routine data associated with monitoring; records date, time, weather and water conditions

·  Assists in fisheries and wildlife habitat mapping and vegetation community classification. Under the direction of the Biologist, records data for trout streams and sensitive species habitats including HCP covered species, sensitive species, and Watershed Management species

·  Assists in benthic macroinvertebrate studies on Bay Area creeks; records basic environmental parameters such as water temperature and dissolved oxygen levels

·  Participates in stream or reservoir electrofishing, operating a boat or motor vehicle to capture and transport if necessary fish to other sites for release as directed; cleans and prepares tanks for transport of trapped fish to release sites; releases fish into the new site following prescribed procedures including recording basic indicators such as water temperature and oxygen levels

·  Records field data and files field data sheets using manual and electronic filing systems; enters electronic data into EBMUD databases using desktop computers; runs defined database report queries, checks data accuracy

·  Collects location and attributes data using GPS equipment; transfers and corrects GPS data using desktop software

·  Utilizes GIS software to create maps and perform basic spatial analyses

·  Assists department staff in other wildlife and fish survey methods and survey support including operation of boats and all terrain vehicles (ATVs)

·  Assists department staff as necessary with other wildlife surveys including surveys for raptors (birds), herps and mammals

·  Ensures that survey equipment and vehicles are maintained in good operating condition by repairing nets, cleaning and fueling vehicles, and other minor maintenance as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

1.   Completion of the twelfth grade, or its equivalent, and one year of experience* collecting and recording survey or sampling data for scientific research, laboratory analysis, environmental protection, or regulatory purposes, or closely related work.

2.   Possession of a California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

3.   Sufficient strength to lift 40 lbs of equipment in the field, to stand, walk, hike or canoe for extended periods of time and to swim for self-preservation.

4.   Willingness to work weekends and holidays according to an assigned schedule, overtime as needed, to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, with exposure to insects including ticks that may carry Lyme’s disease, plants including poison oak, animals including rattlesnakes and other potential hazards; and to wear a EBMUD-provided uniform.
