Child Death Research Assistant

This position works as part of the NC Child Fatality Prevention Team (CFPT). 
The purpose of the NC Child Fatality Prevention Team:
  • Reviews all child deaths investigated by the Medical Examiner system including those that are related to abuse or neglect.
  • Collects detailed information and reports aggregate data on child deaths.
  • Makes its recommendations for prevention of deaths to the NC Child Fatality Task Force (NC CFTF)
  • Assesses the operation of the NC Child Fatality Prevention System and works with the Team Coordinators for the Local Review Teams (both the Community Child Protection Teams and the local Child Fatality Prevention Teams) to provide guidelines and review materials for their work.
  • The intended outcome is to identify and close gaps in systems designed to protect children's well-being to reduce the incidence of child deaths in North Carolina.
The primary focus of this position is compilation, review, and follow up of infant/childhood deaths in North Carolina due to abuse, neglect, SIDS or other unexplained reasons, and external forces. The researcher maintains and updates the confidential Child Fatality portion of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner database. The researcher reviews all child deaths ages 0 years through 17 years that are investigated by the NC Medical Examiner System. The researcher expands the investigation as necessary or when requested. Results of the reviews are compiled into a meaningful descriptive report that is relayed to the State Child Fatality Prevention Team. Annually, this position coordinates compilation of the formal CFPT report that is distributed statewide via the NC CFTF. This position responds to all requests for child death data and compiles specific research as needed. This position prepares or assists in the preparation of grants or other special funding projects to promote prevention of childhood deaths.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
