Print/Visual Communications

The Print & Visual Communications Intern’s first and largest responsibility is to write, layout, design, proofread, edit, publish and distribute the Lakesider, the weekly 16-24-page community newspaper. This internship requires a working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop; Illustrator is a plus.

 

All Advancement & Marketing Communications interns will work together on a summer project, exploring a topic that will leave a lasting impact on the department after they leave. Weekly research meetings will be conducted, and the results will be presented to select community and/or board members. The department will carry out the research the following year. Details of the topic have yet to be determined.

 

The ideal candidate possesses excellent writing, design, communications and leadership skills; maintains the ability to work in a team-oriented environment; and is a highly organized, self-motivated individual capable of meeting deadlines. Reliable transportation for delivery of the newspaper is preferred.

 

Please note: This internship runs from May 14-August 18 (or later preferred.) This internship also requires flexibility, as the intern is expected to work days, some evenings and weekends, and all summer holidays (Memorial Day weekend and Fourth of July).

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES (PLUS OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED):

  • Write, layout, design, proofread, edit and publish pages of the weekly Lakesider newspaper

  • Enforce deadlines for Lakesider content and pictures

  • Edit Lakesider article submissions from departments, organizations and contributors

  • Confirm details with departments, organizations and contributors via email or phone; update contact database

  • Maintain professional relationship with publisher, and serve as contact for publication each week

  • Create in-house ad designs for advertisers

  • Conduct interviews, edit and write Lakesider articles and blogs

  • Attend weekly Lakesider layout, blog and photo meetings

  • Work extended hours on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to meet Lakesider publishing deadlines

  • Complete weekly checklists to maintain Lakesider processes and guidelines, as well as brand standards

  • Distribute the Lakesider newspaper on Fridays and Saturdays

  • Participate in a departmental assessment project regarding research on proposed topic

  • Organize a roundtable discussion with community members based on assessment project research

  • Assist Photography Intern in photographing special events, working some nights, weekends and all summer holidays

  • Edit and update the policy and procedures manual for the internship position

  • Participate in all LLA activities and gatherings

  • Make an oral presentation to the Lakeside Chautauqua staff regarding summer internship experience

 

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Update content on the Lakeside Chautauqua website and blog as needed

  • Create infographics for use on website, social media and blog as needed

  • Generate weekly press releases as needed

  • Design handouts, posters and postcards as needed

  • Assist with community events as needed, including set-up, execution and tear-down
