2017 Summer Program Student Teacher

ABOUT SUMMERBRIDGE HONG KONG:

Founded in 1992, Summerbridge Hong Kong (“Summerbridge”) is a non-profit organization, which creates unique educational opportunities for highly motivated, but socioeconomically underprivileged secondary school students in Hong Kong. It provides comprehensive year-round programs to develop students’ English communication, self-confidence, and interest in the learning process through an intensive English Language Development curriculum, small class size, individual mentoring, and hands-on learning strategies. Each summer, the students are immersed in an intensive five-week, English-only environment, in which they are taught and mentored by a highly qualified group of international student teachers from local and overseas high schools and universities. The uniqueness and quality of the program results from its "students teaching students" model, offering older students the opportunity to teach and administer programs to younger students in a dynamic learning environment where young people are both the initiators and beneficiaries of the educational process.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  1. Between the ages of 16 to 22, enrolled in a high school/university.
  2. An enthusiasm for young people, education, and community service.
  3. No Cantonese necessary, but good English skills is a must.
  4. Be available from June 17 - August 11, 2017.

ABOUT STUDENT TEACHERS - who they are & what they do:

Summerbridge student teachers are between the ages of 16 to 22 from high schools and universities around the world, such as the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Hong Kong. They are a diverse group, bringing a variety of talents and backgrounds to the program; some come with prior teaching experience while others teach for the first time. With the help and guidance from professional teachers, student teachers commit to seven weeks of intensive teaching and community service, in which they complete teacher training, create their own curriculum, teach their own classes, administer programs, and evaluate student performance. Common to all student teachers is a desire to help young people, a commitment to both teaching and learning, and a willingness to work in a demanding yet highly rewarding environment that celebrates academic achievement, creativity, individuality, and risk-taking.

Summerbridge student teachers will receive a stipend for the summer. The purpose of the stipend is to reimburse student teachers for food and transportation costs incurred while working at Summerbridge. The airfare allowance and housing accommodation are only provided to student teachers with relevant Summerbridge experience. That means if you have never previously taught at the Breakthrough/Summerbridge programs, you will need to sponsor your own plane tickets and housing accommodation; however, we will be able to offer you assistance to locate suitable housing. Please keep in mind that you may be able to apply for a scholarship/grant at your school that will cover these costs; many of our student teachers have successfully applied for such scholarships/grants in the past. Please check with the relevant office at your school for more details.
