Position Details

As a member of the Environmental Monitoring Branch’s Surface Water Protection Program, the Environmental Scientist will perform a variety of professional scientific office and fieldwork assignments. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Perform duties involving planning, organizing, and coordinating outreach efforts to County Agricultural Commissioners, growers, water agencies, pesticide registrants, pesticide applicators, university specialists to prevent and mitigate pesticide contamination of surface water. Act as a liaison for evaluating and implementing various control and mitigation measures to protect surface water quality.
  • Perform less complex scientific/technical research and statistical analysis to determine the effects of the transport and environmental hazards assessment of pesticides on environmental health of soil, water and biota; and the efficacy of mitigation measures. Performs field runoff mitigation studies and conducts field sampling in support of surface water program objectives.
  • Serve as liaison within the Department and external stakeholders; negotiates and manages extramural contracts and agreements. Recruits, interviews, and serves as Lead to Scientific Aides and Student Assistants.
  • Write scientific and technical documents for publication. Make oral presentations to governmental organizations, scientific associations, growers, and the public. Perform critical review of data, project proposals, and reports for scientific integrity.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) requires incumbents pass a Medical Evaluation. You will be required to submit to a Medical Evaluation and receive clearance prior to being hired.
  • This position is designated Conflict of Interest and requires disclosure of economic interests.

Working Conditions

Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel and spend nights away from home during the year (up to 30% of the time). They must also be willing to perform field work under a variety of conditions throughout California; to work during irregular hours including weekends and holidays; to conduct office work which includes performing stationary work for prolonged periods of time; and have an interest in and aptitude for the work.
