Campus Representative Job Description

Be a part of something amazing! Help coordinate and lead a group of your peers to be a part of a global movement!  Campus Reps are fundamental to the growth and development of our organization. Each Rep acts as a liaison between participating college students and Global Student Embassy’s international network. The Rep empowers other students to get involved, engage as volunteers, fundraise for the cause, and ultimately deepen the impact GSE makes in communities.  You will be a critical voice for the perpetuation of our programs and the implementation of new projects through the mobilization of other students.

Goals

  • Recruit group of 15 - 20 students - All GSE programs have a minimum size of 15 to operate properly and maximize its impact. Campus Reps are responsible to build this level of interest and commitment.

  • Find 2-3 strong faculty allies for student involvement in GSE programs.  In order to establish long-term sustainability, Campus Reps will build a GSE network within his/her University to promote: internships, research partnerships, and meaningful inter-institutional collaborations between GSE, universities and high schools abroad and your school.

  • Establish GSE as an official campus club or become affiliated with an existing club, represented at club fairs and campus events.

Time Commitment

  • Main Campus Rep - Approximately  15 hours of work a week for September-December (this is the most important time period and thoughtful prioritization  of tasks upfront will mean less time is necessary later on). In January-April a few meetings will also be coordinated.

  • Co-Campus Rep – approximately 7-10 hours during the same periods of time.

What Reps will gain

  • A recruitment group (not including reps) of 15 gets:

    • Main Campus Rep – Full trip scholarship

    • Co Campus Rep – Half trip scholarship

  • A recruitment group (not including reps) of 20 gets both of you a full trip scholarship!

Strategy

Initial outreach & recruitment....

  • Networking on campus to find opportunities for presentations

  • Schedule and hold 5-8 interest meetings

  • Give 10-30, 5-10min class presentations to support interest meetings (This number depends mostly on the size of your school and the size of your classes you're presenting in.  Aim big - to get 50 people in the room, you want to tell 1,000-1,500 students about the upcoming interest meeting.)

  • Write interest-meeting times up on the blackboards  (even in classrooms where you can't give presentations).  This will be particularly effective in large lecture halls.

  • Email advisors in ALL relevant departments and ask them to forward information about the interest meetings to their list serve. Visit professors who can be especially good allies at their office hours to get deeper advocacy.

  • Email club presidents of likeminded clubs on campus and either have them share information with students or ask to give a presentation at their next club meeting

  • Outreach & manage social media platform to support recruitment & keep students engaged

  • Orient students to empowered.org and provide support for them to start their fundraising campaign

  • Put flyers is optimal locations so to maximize the amount of people that see it

  • Meet with the campus representative coordinator to strategize and organize all of this info on a weekly basis

  • Meet and collaborate with your fellow campus representative regularly and consistently

Once you have your group....

  • Support students with fundraising

  • Prepare students for their experience abroad - Give 3-5 workshops developed by GSE staff on GSE and Ecuador/Nicaragua program specifics

  • Check empowered.org regularly to see how participant's fundraising is going.

    • Follow up with students that seem to be having challenges

  • Ensure that all students meet deposit deadlines

  • Hold a weekly meeting to effectively manage and support fundraising campaigns


ON THE TRIP!

  • Chaperone group during international air travel

  • Oversee the health and well being of the group during their time with Global Student Embassy abroad

  • Use your experience and familiarity with GSE to help make the program an excellent experience for all







Main Campus Rep Role

  • Be the voice of GSE at your campus. The main campus representative will be the one taking on the majority of the responsibilities and will be in charge of communicating with the campus rep coordinator on a weekly basis. The main rep will lead the campaign at his/her campus. They will also be the person leading interest meetings. The main campus rep is required to commit 15 hours per week.

Co-Campus Rep Role

  • The co-campus rep will support the main campus rep in all facets of the job strategy mentioned above. The co-campus rep will be in charge of doing widespread advertisement throughout the campus. Examples of this would be sending emails out to listservs, passing out flyers at strategic locations on campus, doing classroom announcement and presenting to clubs. The co-campus rep is required to commit 7-10 hours per week.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to grassroots organizing strategy

  • Upperclassmen pursuing a bachelor's degree in field relevant to GSE's program focus, recent graduates or students pursuing a master's degree in relates fields

  • Interest in environmental restoration, sustainable agriculture, education and international travel

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Strong organization skills

  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks

  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work in a team and independently

  • Creativity and openness to expressing new ideas/ capacity to produce questions that will further Global Student Embassy’s mission and improve programs

  • A positive attitude!
