Activities Coordinator

MCHS is looking for candidates for an Activities Coordinator position that can excel in planning and organizing events for the children that we serve - off campus and on campus. The Activities Coordinator will be superior in their ability to create an environment of inclusion for activities in art, athletics, and other subjects. 

JOB SUMMARY

The Activities Coordinator plans and coordinates activities for the residents on campus as well as for the children and families in the foster care program. The Coordinator works closely with the development department and supervisory teams to coordinate and facilitate on-campus and off-campus activities, the mentoring program, and volunteer engagement. The coordinator promotes physical and psychological well being of the children by planning therapeutic and recreational activities that work to improve cognitive, emotional and social functioning.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as a support member to the group treatment teams with the responsibility for ensuring each child successfully completes the goals set forth in their treatment plan by recommending, developing and implementing treatment programs to meet the needs of the children based on individualized assessments, interests, and treatment plans; assist group treatment teams in planning and evaluating the treatment programs.
  • Observe, analyze and record participation and progress during individual and group treatment sessions, modifying sessions or providing instruction as necessary; encourage participation in agency’s recreational and therapeutic activities
  • Manage the work of assigned interns and volunteers; participate in developing department goals and objectives; assist with maintaining department systems, records and reports; recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures for continual improvement of department services.
  • Recommend, develop, plan and implement recreational and holiday activities, and special events; work with agency staff, volunteers, donors and members of the public to meet the needs of the children.
  • Facilitate classes and group activities in a wide array of areas, including, but not limited to, arts and athletics.
  • Operate according to the program’s Operations Manual and function within agency policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience

The Activities Coordinator will be an experienced professional with an array of activities planning experience, primarily in a recreational or school setting.  The coordinator will be organized, timely, and thorough when implementing programs and be able to utilize internal and external resources.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreational therapy or a related field and at least two (2) years of experience in facilitating recreational activities for at-risk youth.
  • Must meet the State’s Moral Character standard.

The Knowledge of:

  • Computer and software applications (Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • Recreational therapy practices, methods and techniques to improve client functioning and independence.
  • Characteristics, prognosis and limitations of medical, psychiatric, developmental disabilities, sensory impairments and emotional disorders in the evaluation of recreational therapy treatment programs

The Skills and Ability to:

  • Coordinate and facilitate activities for children and families in the residential and foster care programs
  • Oversee the mentoring program for the residential and clinical departments
  • Coordinate volunteer activities and other volunteer engagement initiatives
  • Design, plan, and implement treatment interventions to improve functioning and independence in life activities and reduce limitations to activity participation.
  • Evaluate and document children’s response to treatment and progress towards goals.
  • Facilitate, organize, and oversee the campus-wide recreational schedule for the residents
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Relate to youth and gain their respect and confidence.
  • Perform behavior management techniques to control aggressive behavior.
  • Manage time and multiple priorities, meet deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Exercise professional judgment in making decisions.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
  • Attend and conduct agency training and maintain necessary certifications and licenses.
