Ld./Sr. EMS_DTS Applications Engineer

Position Overview:

Under the general direction of EMS Network Applications Manager, the Lead EMS/DTS Applications Engineer is critical to ensure that EMS and DTS tools suite used for monitoring & studying system conditions and running simulation scenario training across the entire Western Interconnection are highly accurate and reliable. The Lead EMS/DTS Applications Engineer serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in maintaining key real-time applications in control room, such as state estimation (SE), real-time contingency analysis (RTCA), online voltage stability and transient stability analysis, supporting DTS based operation training programs, and implementing advanced new technologies, such as wide area system visualization, system oscillation detection, and bus angle separation monitoring. The Lead EMS/DTS Applications Engineer requires strong power systems analysis knowledge and extensive system operations support experience, excellent skills in problem solving, programming/scripting, effective communication and teamwork within Peak’s challenging and collaborative environment.

Major Duties:

  • Serve as technical SME in support of integration of all advanced network applications and DTS tools in the control room operations and various operation training.
  • Work closely with Real-time Operations Engineers (ROEs) and Study Operations Engineers (SOEs) to ensure real-time applications and study tools solution quality by monitoring established applications performance metrics, and support the ROEs and SOEs to perform their duties in monitoring and analysis of the Bulk Electric System (BES)
  • Assist the Manager in coordinating EMS/DTS engineering resources and bridging the RC Operations and Training departments to meet EMS/DTS training objectives and support relevant internal and external training programs planning and delivery.
  • Lead Major Vendor software enhancements/new product implementation, acceptance testing and deployment in Production successfully and cost effectively.
  • Represent Peak interests in working groups and other industry-related forums to include meeting facilitation, preparation & delivery of presentations, and generation of reports.
  • Advise the Manager on various reliability issues, EMS/DTS tools performance gaps, and potential need of new analysis software/technology development.
  • Coach and develop new hires and junior engineers. Lead production issues trouble shooting and support EMS engineering on-call rotation (as needed).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related technical field or equivalent combination of education and work experience resulting in demonstrated ability to perform major duties. Advanced degrees in power systems fields are preferred.

Experience/Skills

  • 10+ years of work experience in power system operations engineering in support of real-time applications or Master’s degree in power engineering and 8+ years’ direct work experience may be considered.
  • Extensive experience with real-time state estimation, contingency analysis applications, voltage stability and transient stability study within the BES.
  • Prior experience in support of DTS training module development and/or operations training delivery.
  • Proficiency in standard office software applications including MS Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
  • Excellent business organization and communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver clear, concise presentations in a large group, are essential to success in this position.
  • Ability to set and meet self-imposed deadlines and conclude assignments with minimal external prompting.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a highly dynamic team environment and assist all groups as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

Above minimum qualifications and the following:

  • Master’s degree (MS) in a power-emphasis electrical engineering program, or related field and 8+ years’ direct experience working in an engineering or operations support role at a major electric utility, Reliability Coordinator, or ISO/RTO.
  • Demonstrated capacity and record of leading through complex projects/tasks within a diverse team.
  • Expertise in GE-Alstom EMS/DTS advanced applications & Habitat database and OSI PI Process book/ESRI visualization platform.
  • Knowledgeable in the modeling of transmission systems, AGC & unit reserves, power system dynamics, System Operating Limits (SOL)/Inter-area Reliability Operating Limit (IROL) methodology, Remedial Action Scheme (RAS)/Special Protection Scheme (SPS) and protective relays.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of applicable FERC, NERC, WECC, and Regional Standards, Procedures and Guidelines, and assure Peak’s compliance with all applicable standards.
  • Familiar with prevalent offline study software tools, such as GE/ PSLF, PowerWorld and PTI/PSSE.
  • Development experience with Python and/or Perl scripts, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Mat Lab, C++, C#, VB.NET, Advanced Presentation Framework (APF) etc.
