Technical Writing Scientist

THORLABS designs and manufactures over 15,000 scientific products and instruments for the optics and laser research industry. THORLABS Headquarters are located in Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, THORLABS also has facilities in Maryland, Virginia, Texas and Michigan, and is established in 8 other countries. THORLABS is a privately held company established in 1989 which now employs over 1400 people.


Purpose of the Position

The primary responsibility is to strengthen Thorlabs’ position as a leading manufacturer of Photonics products through the development of effective product presentations for our website, catalog, and tradeshows based upon basic information from Engineering and Business Unit Leaders. This requires close collaboration with graphic artists. Create and update technical presentations on products for the web and for the catalog. Create and maintain technical presentation material, white papers, and other collateral. In addition to writing will supply technical support to the customers, verbal or written. Create sales synergies between the product lines by being an integral part of the Thorlabs Technical Sales network. This position requires a high degree of drive, interaction, and communication with customers, sales, engineering and business leaders. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

 

 

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Writes technical content (web pages, catalog pages, sell sheets, etc.)
  • Addresses internal/external feedback requiring page upgrades on our ecommerce site
  • As the “gatekeeper” for product releases, ensures all documentation meets organizational standards (i.e., support documents are uploaded to the correct location, drawings adhere to internal guidelines, etc.)
  • Ability to build application images that help customers understand how products are utilized within a lab environment
  • Identifies opportunities for new products and in new markets
  • Structures and organizes the job in close cooperation with business units in the United States and globally
  • Aims to make customers efficient when it comes to making a buying decision
  • Ability to guide graphics staff, clearly and effectively communicating desired outcomes

 

 

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Qualifications

Experience:

Prior photonics lab experience is desirable.

 

 

Education:

Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D degree in Physics or a closely related field

 

 

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

·         Strong interpersonal skills for working in a team environments.

·         Willing to constantly learn new technologies, new applications and new developed products. Strong organizational and planning skills.

·         Able to multitask, be detail oriented, solve problems, and can work under time constraints

·         Excellent writing and presentation skills in English.

·         Excellent organizational skills
