Staff research associate

Staff Research Associate, limited position

A full-time SRA limited position is available at the University of California, San Francisco (Parnassus Campus). This visual science laboratory’s research is focused on studying the cellular and synaptic mechanisms of the leading cause of irreversible blindness, glaucoma. The technician will work closely with a clinician-scientist and other members of the laboratory. The position may also include management of a core confocal microscopy system for the Department of Ophthalmology.

The goal of this position is to provide technical assistance in research experiments, order laboratory materials and supplies, maintain mouse colonies, and manage university compliance protocols. There may also be a component of core confocal microscope management.

The candidate should have experience with mice and be familiar with or eager to learn molecular biology, cell biology, and imaging techniques. Mouse work responsibilities include maintaining and breeding colonies of mice, tissue perfusion and handling, and tissue immunohistochemistry. Lab work responsibilities include DNA preparation and PCR genotyping, quantitative PCR, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and image analysis and quantification. The applicant need not be familiar with a given procedure but must be highly motivated, willing to learn, and very attentive to details to benefit from instruction. The expectation is for the candidate to achieve independence in regular activities and maintain detailed records. Additional requirements include: excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Photoshop; ability to work independently and maintain excellent communication with PI and other lab members; ability to multi-task and balance different projects; enthusiasm for working at all levels of research; team player and collaborative spirit; demonstrated excellent record of attendance and punctuality. Other duties will be to perform daily administrative tasks including ordering, managing supplies, and general lab organization. Success in this position will require strong organization and communication skills, attention to detail, motivation, and an interest in learning and the research process.

Qualified individuals must have a B.S./B.A. in biology, biochemistry, and/or neuroscience or the equivalent and prior laboratory experience. Preferred qualifications include: Master’s degree and/or one or more years of recent, directly-related laboratory research experience in cell biology and neurobiology following degree completion, utilizing the methods or techniques required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as experience in confocal microscopy, fine dissection skills, and an eye for subtle differences in tissue, cell, and sub-cellular structure.
