Corporate Strategy Intern

Intern Program Summary

The Consumers Energy Internship Program has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application – experience designed to be complimentary to traditional classroom instruction.

 

In addition to working alongside full-time employees within Corporate Strategy, interns will have the opportunity to participate in a number of optional events within the program. This includes Intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.

 

Job Description/Responsibilities

An intern in the Corporate Strategy group will be helping senior executives make the best decisions possible about critical business issues. In this role, you'll be exposed to a wide range of energy industry issues critical to the company's continued success. You will be continually exposed to challenges that stretch your analytical skills, creativity, business acumen, interpersonal skills and leadership. There are two intern positions available within Corporate Security.

 

The Corporate Strategy Interns will take on the responsibilities of an Analyst or Associate in the Corporate Strategy group, depending on experience. An Analyst is responsible for developing the supporting analysis for critical business issues, translating data into insights, and preparing the insights and recommendations for communication with decision makers.

 

A Corporate Strategy Associate will perform similar tasks but be expected to own more of the thinking in identifying critical business issues, developing hypotheses, structuring analysis, and communicating insights and recommendations to decision makers.

 

Both positions offer an opportunity to develop a skillset of core problem solving skills akin to a strategy consultant role. Interns will be asked to explore the most pressing and potentially disruptive forces facing the utility and energy industries today and develop strategies that will aid senior executives in making decisions.

Requirements/Qualifications

Enrolled and actively pursuing a bachelor or master's degree in the business field majoring in Business Administration, Finance, Data Analysis, Marketing, Communications, Leadership, Industrial Engineering, or a similar field. The minimum GPA requirement for this internship position is 3.0.

 

The following skills and experiences may set you apart from others:

  • Business or energy industry background
  • MBA, strategy consulting or finance experience
  • Ability to identify issues, create hypotheses, structure thinking, and perform analysis that address business issues and generate insights about the business and the industry
  • Experience developing plans that move from strategic recommendations to implementation
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify information sources, gathering and interpreting data
  • Willing to interview company subject matter experts, customers, industry experts
  • Capable of working as a part of a small, multi-disciplinary team to tackle pressing company issues
  • Accurately perform financial, statistical and scenario modeling

 

Primary location of this internship will be at Consumers Energy headquarters in Jackson, MI

Essential Functions:

Business Support Advisors and Consultants support the planning, business analysis, general management, budget preparations and analysis, negotiations, transactions, customer services and auditing of a wide variety of business functions and processes of specific operating and support areas throughout the Company. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, departments and offices. Lead and/or assist with business analysis and support for the plans, reports, impacts, contracts, schedules, estimates, data collection, observations, and field investigations. Provide business analysis and support services with accuracy, on time and under budget. Use computer assisted applications software and equipment to prepare business analysis support documents. Understand and follow Company established standard procedures for file structure and standard procedures for projects. Become familiar with business and department and Company plans and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately. Assists in client contact and communication. Utilize effective communication skills to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public. Public involvement may include producing reports, graphics, presentations, and other visual material as well as occasional speaking or meeting with stakeholders. Attend internal and external meetings. Provide business analysis and support services in a legal and ethical manner. Regular attendance is expected.

 

Hours and Travel:

This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 90% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. This position may require the ability to travel between field locations. This position may include nights and weekend/holiday timeframes.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.
