Environmental Protection Specialist I

Under direct supervision of the Asbestos lead worker, participates in conducting field and facility investigations and other surveillance activities relative to asbestos removal/demolition; investigates citizen complaints of air pollution control related to asbestos and coordinates activities with local regulatory agencies. Documents enforcement actions against violators; prepares technical reports; interprets agency programs and policies as well as state and federal regulations.

Education and Experience:  Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with coursework in physical, life or environmental sciences. Requires three years' professional experience in pollution abatement or a related field or requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years' college with coursework in physical, life, or environmental science supplemented by a master's degree. Requires one year of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of pollution abatement or a related field.

Specific Job Requirements: Must be able to pass a physical exam intended to determine whether a person is medically fit to wear respiratory protection and function in high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing. Must be able to lift heavy equipment up to 50 pounds. Hearing and eyesight must be good or correctable in order to safely respond to emergency field conditions. Requires travel and a valid driver's license. Requires one year of experience in the field of asbestos abatement; requires extensive knowledge of NESHAP, IDPH and OSHA regulations, state and federal laws, and rules and regulations. Requires current asbestos inspector license.
