Advocacy Corps organizer for the Friends Committee on National Legislation

The Advocacy Corps pays young advocates to work in their own communities, with support and compensation from FCNL, to organize peers to lobby Congress.

This 2018-2019 Advocacy Corps class will be working in an election year and in the first months of a new Congress on federal policy to challenge the militarization of our local police. We will be particularly spotlighting how the transfer of military-grade weapons to local police reinforces the “occupation and control” mentality of local police departments, creating an atmosphere of mistrust and peril among the members of the community. The U.S. system of policing today prioritizes punishment. This approach, especially burdens community members of color, who are arrested more readily, sentenced more harshly, and treated less compassionately upon release.

FCNL has lobbied Congress for many years to end the program that gives these weapons of war to police forces. If you are selected as a member of the Advocacy Corps, you and your fellow organizers will continue this work by lobbying your members of Congress to support legislation that values community relationships, not weapons.

In the Advocacy Corps, you will learn critical organizing skills and put them into practice with hands-on leadership experience. Advocacy Corps organizers will help arrange meetings with members of Congress in their local offices. We'll help you develop a work plan that highlights your strengths and organizing style. Applicants receive a $3,000 stipend over the course of the program. Please refer to the full job description and see frequently asked questions for additional information.
