Aerospace/Controls Engineer

Description:  Provide engineering design, implementation and testing to develop simulations that enable technologies for air and space propulsion systems. Work will focus on the development and implementation of realistic hybrid electric aircraft engine simulations, both nominal and off-nominal, and model-based controller design for aircraft engines. 

Scope of Work: Primary duties include: Defining modeling and control system requirements, selection of appropriate modeling strategy and fidelity, and design, development, and implementation of control laws for targeted aerospace propulsion systems and subsystems. Duties may also include support for planning activities, simulation development to support other control design efforts, software maintenance, documentation, and implementation and validation testing of control algorithms in simulation, ground test, and/or flight test environments. Work supports two specific areas: SE209 (Flight Simulator Fidelity for Stall Modeling) and Dynamic Modeling and Intelligent Control (DMIC).

 Requirements:

  • Practical understanding of classical, modern, and intelligent control-based approaches.
  • Understanding of thermodynamic modeling techniques.
  • Understanding of electrical system modeling and control concepts.
  • Proficient in MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Familiar with C.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Team oriented - excellent interpersonal skills.
  • U.S. citizenship is required

Other Desired Skills:

  • Direct experience or knowledge of hybrid electric propulsion system modeling and control design.
  • Strong knowledge of electric motor control, generator control, power electronics (inverters and rectifiers), and batteries.
  • Experience in development, implementation, testing, and validation of control algorithms.
  • Direct experience with aircraft engine design.
  • Direct experience with gas turbine control system design.
Education/Experience:
  •  Bachelors in Aerospace, Aeronautical, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience: 1-3 years
