Job Description Summary:


DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the Supervisor of Skilled Maintenance perform journeyman-level to apprentice skilled work in alteration, service, repair, maintenance, and plumbing of buildings and facilities; and perform other related duties as required.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Skilled Maintenance: Plumber class is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series in that primary work will be performed as a plumber. Incumbents perform skilled work in mechanical and plumbing maintenance of buildings and facilities, and may work in other building trades as required.


The Plumber II position is distinguished from the Plumber I by the requirement to perform advanced technical work related to diagnostic and repair to backflow devices and pool plumbing equipment and components and assist with designing new plumbing systems.


The Skilled Maintenance Plumber I and II promote institutional effectiveness by ensuring that District facilities are maintained in a safe and clean working condition for all students, faculty, staff, and the community.


Essential Functions & Qualifications:


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Levels I & II


• Trouble-shoot and make repairs in emergencies as needed; on call for emergencies outside regular working hours;

• Repair and trouble-shoot natural gas, heating, air conditioning, electrical, and lighting systems;

• Perform building mechanical maintenance service; repair, inspect, lubricate, and adjust fixtures and equipment;

• Weld, cut, and braze/solder using arc, oxy-acetylene, and mig welding equipment;

• Sand, plane, join, saw, and perform other woodwork;

• Rebuild valves, regulators, mixing valves on plumbing systems;

• Install water heaters and related equipment;

• Repair and assemble office furniture;

• Measure, cut, thread, and install pipes;

• Install faucets, valves, fittings, ball cocks, and other fixtures;

• Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled carpentry, electrical, painting, welding, and related maintenance work;

• Design and install new plumbing systems where required;

• Replace plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, and basins; replace faucet washers and packing;

• Clean drains and remove obstructions in water and sewer systems;

• Test and balance aquatics facility water to requirements;

• Inspect, test, repair, and replace fire alarms, smoke and heat detector systems;

• Perform a variety of energy conservation functions;

• Select, order, and maintain an inventory of supplies, materials and parts;

• Work from and understand blueprints, drawings, and sketches;

• Use correct safety precautions in all work;

• Perform a variety of other maintenance work, including the operation of light to moderately heavy construction equipment;

• Demonstrate working skill in mechanical maintenance and plumbing;

• Estimate the scope and cost of work and select necessary tools and materials to complete;

• Inspect and repair roofs;

• Perform sheet metal work on lockers and other facilities;

• Plan and draw simple drawings of assigned projects;

• Compile written reports and give oral reports on work;

• Operate a fork lift; and

• Perform other related duties as required.


Level II


• Coordinate as assigned by the Supervisor of Skilled Maintenance the work delegated to the Level I Plumber, hourly and student workers;

• Test and repair/replace backflow prevention devices annually (certification required).


QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Level I & II Required


• Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade


Preferred


• Completion of Apprenticeship in one or more building trades or vocational training program;

• Associate's degree.


Level II Experience:

Required


• Either completion of a recognized apprenticeship in Plumbing and two years journeyman-level experience in Plumbing or 5 years of journeyman-level experience in Plumbing.


Preferred


• Two years' experience with the District.


Knowledge of:


• Tools, materials, methods, and terminology used in one or more of the building maintenance trades;

• Methods and practices used in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment;

• Safe working practices;

• Building codes, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to mechanical maintenance and plumbing;

• Material Safety Data Sheets;

• Hazardous Communications Regulations - "Right to Know";

• Fire Prevention codes and extinguishers;

• Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;

• Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and

• District policies and procedures.


Ability to:


• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and

• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.


Physical ability to:


• Bend and twist, push and pull, stoop, kneel, crawl;

• Lift 100 pounds and carry 50 pounds;

• Reach in all directions;

• Work at heights;

• Ascend and descend ladder.

• Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;

• Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;

• Sit or stand for extended periods of time; and

• Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.


License and Certificates (current within the last year or must be continuously current):

Required Level I & Level II


• Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire


Level I & Level II (must obtain as a condition of employment)


• California Backflow Device Certification

• Aquatic Facility Operator Certification;

• Forklift Certification:

• CPR and First Aid Certificates.
