Position Summary:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) serves as the Chief of Staff to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED), coordinating all activities that report to the Vice President and acts on behalf of the Vice President when necessary. The Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (OVPRED) manages UB’s sponsored awards portfolio of $164 million in expenditures (FY17) and is responsible for UB’s research enterprise and economic development activities. The AVP is the primary point of contact for university leadership (President, Provost, Vice Presidents, Deans) for questions related to UB’s research and economic development activities and actively participates in the senior leadership team of the Vice President. In addition, the AVP actively participates in strategic planning with university leadership to grow the university’s research collaborations, research expenditures, (sponsored) academic programming, innovation and other activities that will contribute to UB’s regional, national and international impact.
The AVP oversees the creation, review, interpretation and implementation of research policies, and serves on multiple university committees to represent the research mission of the university. The AVP is also responsible for OVPREDcommunications, working with unit communicators, University Communications, and decanal units in developing strategic communications messages to highlight UB’s research and economic development initiatives.
Finally, the AVP advocates for resource allocation across units that report to the VPRED, including requests for funding of new initiatives to provide dedicated resources to better serve faculty, researchers, students and external stakeholders.
Duties and responsibilities
• Serve as Chief of Staff to the Vice President for Research and Economic
Development, coordinating all activities that report to the Vice President. As the
primary point of contact for university leadership (President, Provost, Vice
Presidents, Deans) for questions related to UB’s research enterprise,
the AVP is responsible for coordinating information flow with both
internal and external stakeholders and serves a key resource for institutional
projects and priorities that intersect with research and economic development –
both across the institution, and with Research Foundation
or SUNY Central offices.
• Oversee sponsored research/activities policy creation, review, interpretation
and implementation on behalf of the university. Coordinate all sponsored
activities policy review/implementation across multiple units. Work with UB,
Research Foundation and SUNY legal counsel and compliance offices on
policy interpretation and implementation.
• Vision planning and implementation. The AVP works with the Vice
President and members of the OVPRED senior staff to set strategic
vision, and implements programs, processes and procedures to realize this
strategic vision.
• Manage OVPRED staff. Excellent leadership and management skills and
demonstrated experience in supervising personnel, including the ability to
recruit, train, employ team-building techniques and empower staff with
knowledge, responsibility and authority.
• Communicate to internal and external communities with respect to UB research
and development, scholarly, entrepreneurial, and other programming. Excellent
written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present
information to many diverse individuals and groups.
Minimum Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree and must have experience in senior-level staff or planning positions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, strong qualitative, analytical and writing skills are essential, as is the ability to work collaboratively within the OVPRED team as well as across the university research community.
- Strong computer skills with respect to financial planning, project management and high quality presentation and communications tools are essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree and/or previous experience in higher education preferred.
- Experience with UB’s administrative policies and processes as well as in research administration and the regulatory environment that governs university sponsored activities.
Salary: $90,000 - $125,000
FTE: 1.00
