We are recruiting for a junior inspector/surveyor to perform journey level field and/or laboratory inspection, testing, office engineering, and field surveying of varying responsibility and difficulty. This person works as part of a project management crew and assists the project manager in administering construction contracts and supports the development of design projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Act as project inspector on multiple construction projects and enforce compliance to contract requirements.
  • Read and comprehend contract plans and specifications, grade sheets, construction staking, and other survey information.
  • Monitor contractor's processes, procedures and progress.
  • Prepare general daily progress reports, pay documents for progress payments, and other project documentation.
  • Reject defective materials or workmanship and suspend non-specification work or procedures.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to monitor upcoming schedules and work activities for potential issues.
  • Handle routine issues that occur between the agency and the contractor.
  • Coordinate and assist in ensuring that materials field testing is performed in accordance with the Manual of Field Tested Materials at the required frequencies.
  • Assist in ensuring contractors and subcontractors meet labor requirements.
  • Work cooperatively with the construction coordinator to manage crew schedule, balance workload, and ensure coverage of key inspection activities and effective use of the workforce.
  • Measure and compute quantities for pay items for construction contract bid items.
  • Act as member of a survey crew running control lines, traverses, levels, cross-sections, and horizontal and vertical curves.
  • Collect data for detail mapping and utility locating, layout and grade stakes, slope staking, grade hubs, curbs, and a variety of other calculations.
  • Perform complex engineering computations to determine information such as elevations, distances, and highway alignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
An associate's degree in engineering technology from a community college or technical school of engineering and two years of experience directly related to engineering.
OR
Three and one-half years (42 months) of sub-professional engineering experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.

If your experience includes work in multiple maintenance disciplines (e.g. highway, sign, bridge, striping or landscape) please attach section three of the position description for each of the relevant disciplines.
 
Special Qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have completed ODOT inspector certifications including:
    • Certified General Inspector (CGI)
    • Certified Bridge Construction Inspector (CBCI)
    • Certified Environmental Construction Inspector (CECI)
    • Certified Drilled Shaft Inspector (CDSI)
    • Certified Asphalt Concrete Pavement Inspector (ACP)
    • Certified Traffic Signal Inspector (CTSI).

 
Working Conditions:

  • This position regularly spends more than half of their time in the field.
  • Field work involves walking on rough terrain, stooping or bending around structures or equipment, working above the ground or water on platforms or machinery, and exposure to extreme hazards of traffic and construction equipment, and inclement weather.
  • Long hours, varied shifts, and overnight travel regularly required. Employees are to be available at any time including holidays for emergency purposes.
  • This position has regular contact with contractors and the public who may be adversarial at times.
  • Occasionally works with hand tools or around hazardous chemicals and radioactive sources.
  • Occasionally lifts 40 to 60 pounds.
  • Regularly required to drive state vehicles on a daily basis.
