Pro-Poor Economic Development Summer Intern
We seek an intern to support the program’s work on sustainable development, socio-economic development and democratic governance. In addition to being exposed to trends and issues in these fields, the intern will provide assistance on data cleaning, analysis, reports, and presentations. This is a full-time position (30-35 hours per week) based in our New York office.
About Pro-Poor Economic Development Program
The Pro-Poor Economic Development (PPED) Program seeks lasting improvements in the economic well-being of poor people in low-income countries of Sub-Saharan Africa. It supports innovation, research and evaluation, and the scaling of evidence-based approaches to reducing poverty.
Program-Related Responsibilities
- Conduct research and
qualitative analysis on sustainable development topics
- Clean data and prepare codebook
for a set of survey data
- Use statistical methods
and tools to answer a set of questions related to the survey data
- Draft reports and
presentations
- Perform other relevant
duties as assigned
The successful candidate will be expected to work on two primary projects, in collaboration with and reporting to a research associate and a program officer in the PPED team. This would entail developing a research plan, including desk research and interviews, to complete a report on key stakeholders’ work on sustainable development and formulating an analysis from the research. Assistance with survey data will include cleaning a data set, completing a codebook, and analysis of key variables.
Desired Qualifications
- Current students working toward, or recent
graduates holding a degree in development economics, sustainable development, political
science, or related fields
- Strong analytic and research
skills
- Previous experience with statistical analysis
- Strong working knowledge of Excel
- Fluency in English and
excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate
concisely and for a professional audience
- Experience living,
studying, and/or working in low-income countries preferred
- Ability to handle
confidential information with complete discretion
- Excellent interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work independently and with initiative, and with colleagues from diverse cultures
