Under the supervision of the Engineer, the Engineering Technician performs administrative and engineering duties in directing the activities associated with the Engineering Division. The employee in this position also performs skilled technical work in drafting and preparing specifications on municipal engineering projects. The employee will assist with the development of designs, plans and specifications for city public works projects, and will assist with contract administration, construction, and major maintenance work requiring engineering review. The employee in the position may serve as an instrument operator on a survey team and perform inspections of construction work, and will frequently use independent judgement on technical matters.

Experience:  Prefer two to five years of experience as an engineering technician in a technical and administrative capacity similar to or of a municipal public works nature. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position; Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Education: College degree preferred. Technical Degree with required courses in the technical engineering field including drafting and surveying preferred.

Skills: Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering and construction materials, practices and procedures. Knowledge of federal, state and city codes, laws, rules and regulations relative to municipal public works. Ability to prepare clear and concise reports. Ability to operate survey equipment with a thorough knowledge of survey equipment and methods used for field surveying. Thorough knowledge of drafting procedures and methods of plans and specification preparation. The ability to make mathematical engineering computations. The ability to operate a transit, level, drafting machine, planimeter and calculator.
