ACE/NPS WV: New River Gorge Digital Asset Management Internship - AmeriCorps

Summary: American Conservation Experience (ACE), a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with New River Gorge (NERI) National River in West Virginia is seeking ONE Digital Asset Management Intern to dedicate 12 weeks to the NERI Interpretation staff. The purpose of this position is mainly to create a digital asset management (DAM) system for organizing and searching for park photographs and videos. The intern will use state of the art DAM software that will allow the embedding of metadata, making assets searchable and potentially accessible to the public. 

These opportunities are intended for enthusiastic, emerging professionals with a background in computer science, photography, graphic arts, or history who possess a deep interest in advancing their career goals through learning and commitment to the New River Gorge National Rivers' professional staff and resources.

Start Date: May 14, 2018

End Date: August 3, 2018

Location: New River Gorge National River, Glen Jean, West Virginia. 

New River Gorge National River (NERI) is located in southern West Virginia and encompasses 70,000 acres and 53 miles of one of the oldest rivers on the continent. NERI is home to a vast array of natural and cultural resources. Renowned for its recreational opportunities, NERI host miles of hiking and biking trails, premiere white water rafting, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and camping. 

Park staff also manages nearby Bluestone National Scenic River (BLUE) and Gauley River National Recreation Area (GARI). BLUE protects 10.5 miles of free flowing river and offers a rich variety of natural resources and history along the Bluestone Turnpike Trail. GARI protects 25 miles of the Gauley River and 6 miles of Meadow River. Known for its multiple class V rapids, GARI is one of the most adventurous rivers in the east.

Compensation: The ACE intern will be expected to serve 40 hours/week to receive a living allowance of $250/week. Also, a $250 reimbursement is available for relocation or commuting expenses. If housing is not required, less than 40 hours/week is negotiable with the minimum hours per week no less than 20. 

The intern will have use of a government vehicle for project-related travel, though a personal vehicle is required for time off and transportation to/from the park. Housing is provided at no cost to the intern by the park and consists of a furnished house located 6 miles from park headquarters and 13 miles to the nearest grocery store. Absolutely no pets are permitted in government housing. 

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 450-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1538.36) upon successful completion of internship hours. Additional enrollment is required.

Position Description: The primary duty of the intern is to refine a digital asset management (DAM) system for organizing and searching for park photographs and videos. The intern will use DAM software that will allow the embedding of metadata, making assets searchable and potentially accessible to the public. Additional duties entail assisting park interpretive staff as needed, providing information to the public at the visitor center and on park trails.

This project will entail:

  • Gathering information and embedding metadata for each asset.
  • Adding metadata to the Master Keyword list.
  • Removing irrelevant and duplicate assets
  • Collaborating with park staff to gather assets.
  • Selecting high resolution photographs from existing park collection.
  • Assisting park staff with adding to collection where needed.
  • Assisting park staff with projects involving use of assets. 
  • Providing orientation to park staff on DAM software.

Training: The intern will be given the time for online instruction of the DAM software program. Depending upon when the intern enters on duty, an additional 40 hours of park orientation training will be provided.

Physical Demands: Duties are primarily sedentary and are conducted indoors sitting at a workstation. Some duties require standing for up to four hours at an information station, walking over uneven terrain potentially in adverse weather conditions, driving, and bending.  

Qualifications: Applicants for the position must hold/be pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science, photography, graphic arts, history or a related field. They must either have the education or the proven capability to perform/learn how to successfully complete tasks using DAM software programs. They should also be able to collaborate with a variety of other divisions in gathering and researching the assets.

Required:

  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be 18-35 years of age (interns must be 21-35 to apply for any ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties.)
  • Must have a valid driver's license; clean driving record and the ability to provide documentation upon request, personal vehicle is required
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences; ability to serve alone and in a group
  • Must be able and willing to serve outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and capable of participating in physical labor
  • English proficiency is imperative
  • Must have demonstrated research and organization skills
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required

Preferred:

  • Proficient in photography
  • Interested in natural and cultural resources
  • Self-starter personality, organized, detailed, accurate, and has great time-management skills

The interns must be willing to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
