Second Step Program Teacher (6890)

SIUE’s East St. Louis Center is seeking a qualified teacher to serve as a Second Step Teacher for children enrolled in Head Start Collaborations. The Second Step Early Learning program teaches preschool-aged children, enrolled in Head Start/Early Head Start programs, core social-emotional and self-regulation skills, including executive-function skills, skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, problem-solving skills, friendship skills, and transitioning to kindergarten.

The Second Step Teacher will prepare developmentally appropriate lesson plans and implement the Second Step curriculum. The incumbent will schedule and perform home visits for all children enrolled in their assigned Head Start collaboration, collaborate with regular classroom teacher on topics of discussion for home visits, and share responses and results with classroom teacher. The Second Step Teacher is also responsible for maintaining children's files and completing all paperwork in accordance to Head Start Performance Standards and SIUE Policies and Procedures.

Additionally, the Second Step Teacher will work to involve parents in all aspects of the curriculum to help ensure a positive home-center connection and a family partnership. As part of these duties, the Teacher will maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents through a variety of methods (phone calls/notes) and send activities home that parents can do with their children to support the curriculum and the child's learning.  Further duties and responsibilities may be assigned based on the program and department's needs and goals.  

The Second Step Teacher position is a nine- month (September - May), full-time position based out of SIUE’s East St. Louis Center.  The SIUE East St. Louis Center is dedicated to improving the lives of families and individuals from pre-school through adulthood in the Metro East region. The Head Start/Early Head Start program serves more than 1,700  families and youth from birth to age five (including children with special needs) in St. Clair County. The program includes 14 early childhood centers, seven managed directly and seven collaborations. Services include a rigorous school readiness program, educational programs for family members, and health and dental screenings.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

A bachelor’s or advanced degree in early childhood education;
OR a bachelor’s or advanced degree in a related field such as child development or child and family development with experience teaching pre-school aged children.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience in teaching infants/toddlers and/or pre-school aged children.
-Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem solving skills.
-Ability to work as a team member and work effectively with all levels of staff, parents and center volunteers.
