Summer Analyst

The summer analyst capacity is fundamentally an extension of the full time analyst position itself. Interns will be engaged in working on scraping, cleaning and preparing data for analysis, distilling complex information and formulating concise qualitative findings to project managers and supporting case objectives with rigorous analytic and empirical tests.

Commonly, summer analysts will be required to manually, or through the use of computer programming, scrape, clean and prepare data for analysis. Much of the data that we utilize comes from various databases that we have access to and is uniform and structured. But, we also receive large data sets that are unstructured, or need to be pulled from sources that may not uniformly provide the content. In these cases summer analysts will be instructed to utilize the best course of action to 'clean' the data so that it can be analyzed as a standalone project or so it can be merged onto other data sets and assist in building a more robust and complete data analysis.

Though quantitative analysis will be utilized, qualitative analysis is also required. A principal skill in research is building a clear foundation of qualitative information so that inferences obtained are matched appropriately to the topic of concern. Summer analysts will assist in distilling information from case relevant documents as well as third-party information in order to direct and support analytic findings.

Interning analysts will take from each of the fundamental areas previously listed and assist analysts, professional economists and case managers in rigorously testing ideas using data analysis and implementing economic and econometric models.

Though interning analysts act in a supportive capacity, they may be entrusted with doing actual project work and get to explore real topics that demonstrations and case studies can not encapsulate. Many interns find themselves replicating opposing experts work and testing conclusions as well as offering up solutions to complex issues, leveraging and utilizing information that they have learned in their courses of study.
