(1) Culinary Arts and Events Coordinator, (2) Marketing and Hospitality Manager

Two Track Program: Culinary Arts & Events and Marketing & Hospitality

We are looking for highly motivated students to join us for the third year of our Culinary and Hospitality Internship, based out of the Highland Inn and Highland Conference and Retreat Center, in Monterey, VA. Join us for a summer in our beautiful, rural community, where we have many new and exciting projects. With the opening of Big Fish Cider in 2015 and the Allegheny Mountain Institute just outside of town, Highland is bringing together its rich agricultural tradition with exciting forays into the burgeoning local food movement. The Highland Center’s recently renovated Retreat and Conference center is one of these, it will serve as a place for groups to come together for work retreats, serve an event space for weddings and parties, and provide a business incubation space for local businesses. Come be a part of history as we embark on renovation and rehabilitation of the Highland Inn this summer!

As an intern, you will primarily work with the Head Chef at the Inn’s restaurant as well as with other Highland Inn staff. This year, we are offering two different tracks, and looking for one intern to take on each area of focus: (1) Culinary Arts & Events and (2) Marketing & Hospitality. The Culinary Arts and Events Intern will assist the head chef with dinner service, as well as with any special events that the Highland Inn or Highland Center host. The Marketing and Hospitality Intern will help with a marketing plan for the Highland Center’s Conference and Retreat space, as well as help with day-to-day management and marketing of the Highland Inn. Both interns will also participate in providing demonstrations involving local food at the Farmers’ Market each Friday. Other opportunities within the community include visits to our producers’ farms, workshops on local foods in partnership with Allegheny Mountain Institute, and optional guided hikes and foraging walks.

The program will run from May 29th through August 7th, 2018, culminating with our annual “Taste of Highland” event, which is a local foods dinner for the community. You can expect two days off each week, although they may not always fall on the weekends, as lodging establishments are often busier on the weekends. Most weeks, you will work about 40 active hours. You will also act as overnight Innkeeper twice per week, which may bring your total hours to slightly over 40. Housing will be provided as will some food. Interns will be sharing an apartment for the program. Food from the restaurant will be provided several nights a week and interns will also be given a small stipend each week for purchasing food from the Farmers’ Market. Interns will be responsible for other food costs and for transportation (a car is highly recommended, but not required).

Please do not let financial restrictions keep you from applying to this program. We are willing to work with you to find funding if you are unable to pay for food or transport due to financial constraints.
