2018 Fundraising: Prospect Research Internship

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is a non-profit health-advocacy group based in Washington, DC, that focuses on nutrition and food safety. CSPI publishes Nutrition Action Healthletter, one of the nation’s largest‑circulation health newsletter, and has led efforts that resulted in healthier diets, more-nutritious school foods, safer foods, and more honest food labeling. CSPI provides objective information to the public and represents citizens’ interests before legislative, regulatory, and judicial bodies. CSPI is supported largely by subscribers to Nutrition Action Healthletter, individual donors, and foundation grants. 

The Prospect Research Intern will assist the Development team, under the direction of the Development Director, with fundraising projects by producing and updating individual donor/prospect research profiles, reports, and briefing materials, as well as conducting issue-specific research pertaining to grant opportunities with professional foundations. 

This is an excellent opportunity for applicants who want to gain knowledge about the nonprofit fundraising world at a fast-paced and highly effective national advocacy organization. 

Responsibilities and Scope

  • Gather biographical, financial, and philanthropic information from a variety of sources including databases and research tools
  • Produce detailed and qualified profiles for leadership level donors and prospects likely to support CSPI at a significant level
  • Create donor snapshots for qualified Partner-level donors ($500-$4,999 gift range)
  • Assist in proactively identifying foundation and major donor prospects for general support as well as specific campaign/issue areas
  • Maintain and update donor research and contact information in donor database
  • Assist with donor database migration project, as needed 

The desired candidate will demonstrate an interest in CSPI’s mission, and a willingness to learn. No specific fundraising experience is required, but good research, communication, multi-tasking, and writing skills are essential. Candidates should also have strong attention to detail as well as excellent organization and time management abilities, and database experience is preferred. 

This is an unpaid internship and we will consider applicants interested in full-time or part-time positions. We provide a collegial work environment and flexible schedule to accommodate intern academic responsibilities and work-life balance. If the intern’s school offers academic credit for internships, we will work to meet the school’s requirements. We also reimburse interns up to $5/day for commuting expenses.
