Los Algarrobos is an elementary school located in Canoa, on the coast of Ecuador. It has about 100 students ages 5-11. There are 9 teachers, one director, one secretary and one grounds keeper. That's the whole team! The school is funded by the James Dean Byrd Foundation, a U.S. based NGO that works to raise money for teacher salaries, books and supplies, internet, drinking water, construction, etc.

The English teacher will work full time, teaching grades one through four at the school. The teacher will teach according to the basic government requirements and create annual and weekly plans to be reviewed by the English coordinator. Grades two through four will have a text book to guide you. A school day goes from 7AM to 1PM, Monday through Friday and occasionally the government makes us work Saturdays. Classes begin at the end of April, but we understand that many eligible teachers won't graduate until May, and we welcome applicants who cannot start until the beginning of June. The school year ends in February.

Canoa is a popular surf tourist destination. There are lots of  activities to do around town like surfing, yoga, paragliding, and stand up paddle board. There are also lovely nature reserves and local tourist farms nearby for a visit. Ecuador is a beautiful country and it's very small, so you could easily visit the Andes mountains or the Amazon rainforest for a weekend trip or over vacation.

The pay is the equivalent of the Ecuadorian minimum wage, it is the same wage as all other teachers receive. It is possible to live off this stipend alone, but you will have to pay monthly rent for an apartment, so we would recommend arriving with some savings just in case.
