Writing Internship - Summer 2018

Overview

Active Cities (activecities.com) is a free website that makes it easier for people to find active things things to do in their city. The site features a growing network of directories that provide a full list of local sports, recreation, activities and things to do in various cities throughout the U.S. The vision of Active Cities is to become the nation’s largest, most comprehensive online directory for all things active.

We are seeking enthusiastic, self-driven individuals who will be dedicated to the growth, development and overall mission of Active Cities. The Writing Internship comprises several core components centered around content marketing and user engagement. Examples include publishing of weekly blog posts, management of curated newsletters, and use of various social media accounts on a daily basis. Each team member will gain hands on experience with a variety of writing and marketing strategies including keyword research, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), photo/image editing, and outreach/networking. Team members will also learn how to use various softwares and utilities such as Wordpress, Slack, Asana and Skype. This internship has an extended component in which select team members will be provided the opportunity to assume leadership and management duties for additional terms.

This is a virtual internship that provides candidates the opportunity to conduct their work remotely from any location. The position is part-time (approx. 10 hrs. per week) from January 8th through April 30th, and is ideal for candidates who have the ability and desire to manage a flexible work schedule with no physical office. The internship is unpaid, but can be used to obtain educational credits or satisfy a degree requirement (please speak with your Faculty Advisor to learn if this is an available option for your course of study).  This is an excellent opportunity to contribute directly to the growth of a small business, as well as develop a broad range of skills that can apply to any professional work setting.

Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly team meetings via Skype, provide project updates and contribute to group discussions

  • Brainstorm and submit ideas for blog content and newsletters on weekly basis

  • Produce written content that is consistent with, and promotes the mission of Active Cities

  • Share and promote published content using various marketing tools and strategies

  • Schedule social media posts and engage with users via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram accounts

  • Participate in group discussions and decisions concerning the business as a whole

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students preferred

  • Ability to manage a flexible work schedule with no permanent office location

  • Strong written and interpersonal skills

  • Creativity, critical thinking, versatility

  • Experience with creating and publishing written content

  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn web-based utilities such as Wordpress, Asana and Slack
