Libraries Rock VISTA (AmeriCorps)

Hiawatha Public Library is a destination for families during June and July. It is a vibrant part of our community and the atmosphere is electric with possibility all summer long. We want you to be a part of it and help us lead others to success!
As a Hiawatha Public Library VISTA member, you will be an integral part of our summer reading program – Libraries Rock! You will coordinate our Libraries Rock Out outreach program, work with staff to provide programs and services to community youth, register summer reading program participants and maintain the program database and assist with the daily machinations of Hiawatha Public Library. Your role will be varied and will make a positive impact on readers of all ages.
Your Libraries Rock! VISTA member duties include:
You will be involved in all facets of Hiawatha Public Library’s Libraries Rock! program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Serve as a site coordinator and liaison for Libraries Rock Out site – work with partner organization staff and library staff to deliver the weekly program and track data related to the program.
2. Register participants in the library’s Libraries Rock! reading program and update their progress.
3. Assist in the coordination of materials and crafts for the library’s Libraries Rock Out summer program.
4. Assist library staff with the delivery of other weekly programs, events, and activities related to Libraries Rock!
5. Assist library staff with daily functions such as checking out materials, discharging materials and assisting library patrons.

· You can successfully communicate with a diverse group of people through various channels.
· You are comfortable and confident working with computers and know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite.
· You are able to effectively manage time and prioritize duties working in a busy atmosphere.
· You enjoy being a part of a team working to improve your community.
· You are considering a career in education or libraries. (Not required.)

What you bring to the table:
· Ability to commit to a two-month term of service starting May 30, 2018.
· Ability to work comfortably with people, systems, and technology.
· A positive, “can-do” attitude that has you excited to walk in the library’s door and get started.
· Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions.
· Ability to walk, bend, reach, sit, stand for periods of time, and occasionally lift 25 lbs.
· Ability to provide own transportation to outreach site.
Your time commitment.
· This is a full-time, two-month program commitment. Service at the library is 5/30/2018-7/24/2018.
· VISTA members are allowed to hold outside employment if it does not conflict with their VISTA duties.
