Self Sufficiency Support Staff at Off-Grid Alaskan Homestead

May-June, 2018:

We are seeking energetic, adventurous spirits to assist us with the ongoing operations & maintenance tasks at our Off-Grid, Self-Sufficient Homestead in the Wilderness of Alaska!  One to two interns are needed in May & June to start seeds, prepare garden beds with amendments & then transplant seedlings. We will be building a wood-burning cob oven at the end of May for which the locally obtainable, natural components must be gathered & prepped. The gardens will need ongoing care such as weeding & watering & successive sowing of new crops. Intern[s] will also help care for flock of poultry, cut firewood, groom & mark hiking trails & do general labor around grounds such as weed-whacking & painting.

Any interest in/familiarity with Alternative Energy would be beneficial in the maintenance & operation of our micro-hydropower system which provides all of our electricity. Knowledge & experience in the Hospitality Industry would be helpful as we will be hosting several events for paying clients periodically throughout the summer.

Transportation between the city of Kodiak, Alaska, & the homestead is provided, as are room & board. Interns will be asked to sign a work agreement committing to 35-36 hours/week, & will have ample time off for hiking, kayaking, relaxing in the hammock, taking saunas, getting creative in the art studio, etc.  There will also be many opportunities to learn food preservations techniques such as smoking,  dehydrating & pressure cooking. Students must be comfortable in an isolated setting & in sharing quarters w/other interns/volunteers.
