Water Wastewater Operator Certified

A Water/Wastewater Operator performs a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of a municipal water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system and municipal activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. This position is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the municipal water distribution system, water meter repair and testing and sanitary sewer collection system. It will also be responsible for repairing equipment malfunctions and adjusting various operational equipment within the treatment plant. Work involves the responsibility for servicing, operating and maintaining the water distribution, sanitary sewer system, and plant equipment. This position will also be responsible for performing laboratory testing, preparation of reports and record keeping tasks. Responsibilities also include water quality compliance, treatment plant operation compliance and reporting requirements to all governing agencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Water/Wastewater Superintendent.

 

Must be able to work flexible hours. Occasionally requires nights, weekends and respond to emergency call outs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Water Works

  • Controls municipal water pressure and water levels for proper operation, calibration of chemical feed equipment to comply with DNR requirements. Daily sampling and testing of fluoride and chlorine.

  • Monthly samples for bacteria and quarterly raw water samples for laboratory analysis, any other sampling required by DNR regulations

  • Water temperature monitoring. Daily inspection and maintenance of all stations and reservoirs

  • Checks and records pumpage, chemical feed rate, static and pumping level of wells. Inspects, repairs, and replaces motors, pumps, water control panels

  • Inspects storage tanks, building and equipment

  • Answers customer complaints tactfully and courteously. Notifies customers of service interruptions.

  • Coordinates and assists with the repair or replacement of water lines, valves, valve boxes, curb stops and hydrants.

  • Thaws frozen lines and make taps; flushes mains and hydrants; conducts fire flow tests

  • Maintains and exercises valves and hydrants

  • Operates light and heavy construction equipment

  • Maintains inventory of maintenance items and reorders as necessary

  • Responsible for maintenance, annual testing and filing appropriate State reports by certified tester of reduced pressure backflow preventers

  • Works in confined spaces and capable of confined space rescue

  • Responsible for fulfilling maintenance contracts for private hydrants and backflow preventers

  • Maintains daily records of water pumped, hours run time, chemical use and tank levels

  • Assists with the repair or replacement of sanitary sewer lines

  • Responsible for reading, testing, repair & replacement of water meters. Responsible for cross connection inspections and compound water meter testing

     

     

     

     

    Wastewater

  • Prepares reports and maintain accurate records for WPSC and WDNR.

  • Maintains plant operational compliance and reporting requirements of the state and federal agencies, including WPSC, WDNR, EPA, and Department of Commerce.

  • Coordinates sludge hauling/removal with West Central Wisconsin Bio Solids Facility (WCWBF) Manager.

  • Keeps informed of WCWBF operations.

  • Ensures treatment plant is operated in compliance with all regulatory permits and safety regulations.

  • Maintains operations with standards for costs, quality, labor, maintenance, safety and housekeeping

  • Performs laboratory analysis and sampling.

  • Operates electrical pumps, control panels and other pumping equipment

  • Collection system maintenance involving jetter/vacuum truck and sewer televising equipment.

  • Performs other duties as required and assigned in both Water and Waste Water

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Experience

 

Minimum

  • Graduation from high school or GED.

  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

  • Wisconsin Grade 1 with subclass G and D Water Certification or Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Certification at Basic Level for subclass A1, B,C,D,L,P with continued progress towards advanced. If both certifications are not currently attained must obtain within 24 months of hire.

     

    Preferred

  • 2 years related experience within a water treatment and distribution system and a sanitary sewer collection system or an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant.

     

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Good manual dexterity and the ability to access multiple levels of the wastewater treatment plant, sanitary sewer lift stations and manholes for daily inspections. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; lift; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and ladders; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

 

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.

 

The employee is frequently exposed to caustic chemicals, toxic gases, confined spaces, including permit and non-permit areas and occasionally high places.
