Job Description Summary:

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Cuesta College is located at the heart of scenic San Luis Obispo County, and was ranked by Edsmart.org as a top five California community college in 2016.? Cuesta College has a rich history of educating San Luis Obispo County residents since opening in 1963. Cuesta College serves nearly 10,000 students with an increasingly diverse student body of 55% White, 32% Latinx, 7% Mixed Race, 3% Asian/PI, 2% African-American with instruction occurring online and at three physical sites; the San Luis Obispo Campus, the North County Campus in Paso Robles and the South County Center in Arroyo Grande. Cuesta College offers seventy-four degrees and sixty-two certificates, including 26 Associate Degrees for Transfers to the Cal State University system with several more ADTs currently being developed. The college maintains the highest transfer population to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo-twice as many as any other community college. The college also boasts robust Allied Health and Career Technical Education programs and consistently sends students to compete at the national level in areas such as welding, automotive, public speaking and more. The music ensembles are also often in the spotlight with a recent award from Downbeat magazine and performs at state, national, and international festivals.

Cuesta College is committed to being an inclusive institution that inspires a diverse student population to achieve their educational goals. In 2016, it was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institute ("HSI"), reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to further the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. Launched in 2014, the Cuesta Promise Scholarship provides free first year tuition and fees to every new high school graduate in San Luis Obispo County. Over 2,000 students have received the Cuesta Promise with over 30% being Latinx and more than 50% being female. Cuesta College was also the only California Community College awarded a $2.5 million dollar Title V "Developing HSI Grant" from the US Department of Education to expand educational and vocational opportunities for Latinx students. This institution is committed to the Board of Governors California Community College Vision for Success Goals, including eliminating equity gaps within 10 years. The College's Educational Master Plan, Strategic Plan, and Student Equity/Student Success and Support/Basic Skills Integration Plan collectively seek to ensure all students are successful at fulfilling their educational needs.

Cuesta College has 150 full-time faculty, 332 adjunct faculty, 245 classified, and 43 managers and administrators.? The college encourages all employees to be part of the participatory governance process.? The College's annual budget is approximately $53 million.

In addition, thanks to a $275 million bond measure approved by voters in 2014, Cuesta College has been repairing facilities, updating classrooms, equipment, and technology, and improving career education programs. Our growing North County Campus will open a new Campus Center in Spring of 2018 and will house a new Veterans Center, EOPS Center/CalWorks/Foster Youth Center, Disabled Student Program and Services ("DSPS") office and Student Cultural Lounge.?

ABOUT THE POSITION

Academic Success Coaches play a vital role in supporting student success. Through regular one on one sessions, coaches model critical thinking, problem- solving, and study skills for adapting to the demands of academic courses. They track student progress and guide students to explore and develop a customized tool kit of academic strategies, resources, and self-advocacy skills. This degree of personalized, holistic support transforms current performance outcomes and builds strong independent learners with a foundation for future success.

Cuesta College currently has a growing team of Academic Success Coaches dedicated to implementing innovative, equity-minded best practices supporting students. This position is funded through the United States Department of Education Developing Hispanic Serving Institution grant, with the goal to create an academic and corresponding support system for students intending to become K-12 teachers.

Over the next 5 years, this program will assist pathways for students to become K-12 teachers, with the aim to increase the number of Latinx students who identify teaching as a future career. Students interested in teaching preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, special education, and career technical education will receive enhanced support towards achieving their goals. The Bilingual Academic Success Coach will be part of a team of faculty and staff providing this enhanced support, under the guidelines of the grant.

DEFINITION

Under general supervision of a Dean or Director, and in in collaboration with faculty and student services personnel, provide individualized academic support to students enrolled in basic skills Math, English, and ESL courses, with attention to students from economically disadvantaged and ethnically under-represented backgrounds, and disproportionately impacted students as identified in the Student Support and Success Program Plan (3SP) and Student Equity Plan. Academic Success Coaches will proactively identify the populations most anticipated to benefit from academic support, and link them to services. This position will provide personalized academic support to high-needs students.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Academic Success Coach performs a variety of tasks to guide and promote student academic success, including in-class assistance, embedded tutoring, workshops, directed learning activities, and other expanded learning opportunities. Academic Success Coaches collaborate with Enrollment Success Specialists to locate the target populations, direct at-risk students to all student support services, monitor student use of such services, and maintain records of target student progress data. The focus on the student population groups listed above distinguishes this position from other academic support positions.

Incumbents in this position will support institutional effectiveness and student learning outcomes by effectively linking students to appropriate academic support services.

Essential Functions & Qualifications:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Link students to academic support services, with emphasis on tutoring and Success Center Support;
• Introduce alternative or expanded information presented in class to enhance student understanding. Some examples include assist in developing directed learning activities and/or workshops to address academic deficits as directed by instructor;
• Provide academic support to disproportionately impacted students as identified in the Student Equity Plan as the primary focus for academic support;
• Collaborate with faculty to meet the instructional needs related to in-class and embedded tutoring and in-class assistance;
• Collaborate with Enrollment Specialists to direct students to student services support such as financial aid, counseling, and student health services;
• Track and maintain contact with students throughout the semester, ensuring continued student use of support services, and review student progress;
• Assist the college in meeting student retention and success goals;
• Maintain an effective working relationship with students;
• Answer student questions during classroom and lab/tutorial time;
• Assist students in tracking assignments, due dates, missing assignments and the use of a planner;
• Assist students with instructional technology, including software, internet, and word processing;
• Respond constructively to a wide range of student concerns, not all of which are necessarily academic;
• Engage in appropriate professional development; and
• Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required:

• Associate's Degree from accredited university.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written).

Preferred:

• Bachelor's Degree from accredited university.

Experience:
Required:

• 1-2 years relative classroom experience in content area appropriate to the assignment.

Preferred:

• Additional years of independent experience, including leading small groups, skill development and/or other relative experience such as tutoring or academic advising.

Knowledge of:

• Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
• Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
• District policies and procedures.

Ability to:

• Implement techniques for providing academic advising to a diverse student population;
• Work as a team member;
• Exhibit superior interpersonal and problem solving skills;
• Adhere to strict confidentiality and other ethical standards;
• Be clearly student-focused in both philosophy and purpose;
• Work with a minimal supervision;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

Physical ability to:

• Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
• Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
• Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
• Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and
• Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

License and Certificates (current within the last year):
Required:

• Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

Additional Information:

This position is a full time, 10 month position and is grant funded through the Title V grant. The grant is set to expire June 30, 2022.
