Fisheries Biological Aide

About the position

The Salmon Region is seeking four (4) temporary Fisheries Biological Aides (non-benefited) to work as part of a field crew conducting fish (snorkeling) and habitat surveys to determine the abundance and distribution of salmonids in the Salmon River Basin.  

Dates Needed:

June 2018 - August 2018 (dates flexible for returning college students)

General Information:

The work schedule will vary, but will generally consist of 10 hour work days, with 8 days on duty followed by 6 days off duty, or 4 days on duty and 3 days off duty depending on project needs, stream conditions, and weather. Applicants must be flexible on their schedule.  All food, equipment and camping gear (except for sleeping bag) are supplied by IDFG during work shift. Snorkeling crew is required to camp out in remote backcountry areas during their shift. Housing will not be provided during days off.

Incumbents must be able to snorkel in cold water up to 8 hours per day, work in adverse weather conditions, and be able to hike 5-12 miles per day over rough and rugged terrain while carrying a backpack weighing 50-60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Job Responsibilities:

The primary job responsibilities are conducting snorkeling and habitat surveys. Additional duties may include: juvenile screw trap operation, PIT tagging fish, Alpine lake surveys (gillnetting/angling), electrofishing, spawning ground surveys for Chinook salmon, data entry, and equipment maintenance.

Skills/Qualifications:

It is preferred that applicants be enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in fisheries or other biological sciences and/or have previous fisheries work experience. Individuals with experience in the above fisheries techniques and salmonid identification will be given preference.  Proficient in Microsoft applications and experience with using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus.  Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.
