Marketing and Special Events Intern

Mackinac State Historic Parks is a leader in all areas of museum operations and is one of only 25 museums in the nation to have been accredited for a fourth time. With an average annual visitation of 400,000 in just a five-month season, MSHP is one of the most visited history museum systems in the nation! Mackinac State Historic Parks has five museum sites: Fort Mackinac (1780), Mackinac Art Museum (2010), Colonial Michilimackinac (1715), Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse (1892) and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Center (1790). Each historic site is located in a park setting: at the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula is Colonial Michilimackinac, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and Historic Mill Creek Discovery Center in Mackinaw City, and Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island. In addition, MSHP owns and maintains approximately 80% of Mackinac Island which has many historic natural landmarks and approximately 70 miles of walking and biking trails.

 

INTERN LOCATION AND GENERAL INFORMATION:

The workstation for this position is the Post Hospital Administration office on Mackinac Island, MI. This position may be assigned duties at other MSHP sites on Mackinac Island and in Mackinaw City as park needs dictate. The work schedule may vary according to park needs and may include occasional weekend and evening work. Generally this is a 32-hour per week internship working Monday through Friday.

 

SCOPE OF INTERNSHIP DUTIES:

The Marketing and Special Events Intern position will assist visitors at all of the historic sites within Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP). Duties will include meeting scheduled motor-coach groups and providing them an overview of the specific site, assisting other staff at evening programs, weddings, and other special events hosted by MSHP. Based on the individual’s interests and skills, the intern will also have opportunities to participate in all facets of the Marketing Section. May also have other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
1. Greeting and providing an orientation for adult and student groups at all MSHP

    sites.
2. Guiding groups from MSHP Visitor Centers to the next scheduled interpretive

    activity acquainting quests with various visitor services.

3. Acquire knowledge of MSHP sites, locations, programs, and special events to

    provide guests with the best information and to market MSHP.

4. Assisting with various special functions including MSHP evening events,

    weddings, and fund raising events.

5. Acquire knowledge of MSHP’s membership organization, Mackinac

    Associates, to assist in member acquisition.

6. Always acting in an engaging and professional manner while engaging the

    various guests of this organization.
