What I liked

The customers, pay, etc.

What I wish was different

My Team Leader was involved more in the beginning for when I was getting trained, other than that I'm not complaining.

Advice

Have to be willing to be flexible while working, don't stick to just one thing.

Cashier

September - November 2019 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

Meijer is incredibly flexible with student schedules; you can tell them your availability, how many/what hours you want to work, and they will make sure to make that happen for you. If you're transparent about your availability from the start, they will give you a consistent weekly schedule that you can count on. The job itself is nice! 5 hour minimum shifts, with all of them going by very quickly as you're always ringing people up, cleaning, or pushing carts. Would definitely recommend as part time student work.

What I wish was different

Nothing awful from my memory! Just be sure of your schedule and availability from the start; any times you say you are available to work? If they are a 'non preferred time' (e.g. Saturday/Sunday), it will be a requirement for your hiring that you work that time always.

Advice

Show up on time, be professional, don't let any bad moments/interactions get under your skin. It's definitely a lot at first, but if you keep your head up you can enjoy your time here!

What I wish was different

I wish that during slow hours or when I was not checking customers I could have sat down on a stool or leaned on something because it was long hours to stand on a hard floor.

Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

It was a very well structured program. We heard from nine different executive speakers (including the CEO), went on a two-day intern road-show to learn more about the company, and volunteered at the LPGA. At the end of the internship, we presented out final project recommendations to over 100 people, including executives. There is plenty of time to job shadow, network with others, and finish your summer-long project.

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more full-time opportunities in the Supply Chain department after college. There weren't many openings at the corporate office (only at manufacturing plants and distribution centers).

Advice

Take advantage of all of the resources you get for your project and try to shadow as many people as you can.

Working during the summer or increasing your hours during the summer is very important. By doing so, you provide yourself with financially stability. It also possibly allows you to throw some cash into saving for when school starts again
